Man liberal Zionism is so lame. Who is this even for?
Iโm grieving the deaths of the two Israeli soldiers killed in Hebron today, and praying for the full & speedy recovery of those who were injured.
Iโve spoken out loudly this week against Israelโs occupation of the West Bank, which imposes violence on a daily basis, and I will continue to do so. But violence is not the path to ending it โ or to achieving safety, freedom, and peace for both Palestinians and Israelis.
And neither is collective punishment or ethnic cleansing of an entire neighborhood, or punishing millions of people for the criminal act of two, which Netanyahu has promised to enact in response.
Iโve seen a lot this week and Iโll have more to say about in the coming days (Iโm on my way home shortly). There is a path to ending this excruciating cycle of violence. It starts by insisting that every life is sacred, that everyone is created in Godโs image.
For now: Shabbat Shalom, to everyone who believes in the hard work of making peace & justice a reality, for everyone.

Almost an entire week later and not one single major Jewish American institutional org or elected official has publicly denounced this event that was sponsored by the Jewish Federation, the Anti-Defamation League, and the Jewish National Fund.
At the Jewish American Summit in Los Angeles this weekend, Mosab Hassan Yousef told the crowd: "I don't want Muslims in America. Get the f*** out of the United States." A large portion of the crowd applauded and cheered.
This is bigotry, and it should never be met with applause in any room, let alone one at a Jewish event. We call on the sponsoring organizations to condemn this without equivocation.

I am not persuaded by the argument I see often on the left that you have to essentially lie to people about your political commitments and affiliations to get them to your side. Whether itโs about being a socialist or about what needs to be done about policing. To me that betrays a sort of parochial view of the working class that infantilizes them and makes them out to be unable to comprehend concepts that Marxists should always believe they can handle and see value in.

This is a non-answer. Mamdani cannot arrest Netanyahu (The United States is not a party to the Rome Statute, foreign affairs are a federal matter, etc.) Moreover, as a sitting prime minister, Netanyahu has a strong claim to immunity ratione personae before U.S. courts.
If Mamdani wants to take tangible action within the bounds of his office, he could easily urge Attorney General and other relevant authorities to go after New York-registered tax-exempt organizations that funnel tens of millions of US dollars into Israeli settler expansion and violence every year (not niche, irrelevant orgs like Betar that are discredited by even the ADL, but consequential organizations like the Smotrich-founded Regavim, or the Israel Land Fund). Why won't he do that?

The other day I had a conversation with Jackson Hinkle on his show. The show has now been published.
I regret the conversation for several reasons:
1. Because I did not properly understand the political vitriol that has been spread through the United States within the left by the emergence of the what has been called the โAmerican Communist Partyโ;
2. Because I was uncomfortable with the questions that tried to make the case that the left should not champion the fights for basic human dignity (such as around the issue of racism and of sexual discrimination), when I โ in fact โ believe in the fundamental right to human dignity, for the emancipation of all of our humanity;
3. Because I feel that these โargumentsโ are defined by the internet and frame the issue of human dignity in a very wrong and malicious way (I am happy to discuss homosexuality and Marxism, but do not accept the view that the socialist projects in the poorer nations have a โconservativeโ culture that is homophobic โ China decriminalised homosexuality in 1997 and Cuba produced a most liberated Family Law in 2022 through a general referendum process).
I am always happy to speak anywhere and with anyone, but I dislike being trapped into conversations that are framed in a malicious way and are not genuine about building the socialist left in the widest possible manner.
