Competence first, confidence second. For parents who want sports to build better athletes who handle hard things, take ownership, and think for themselves.

Travel sports is not why kids are quitting... I go watch my niece play rec baseball and all teams are doing the same: - Best 2 players play pitch and 1st base, (get 99% of the balls) - Rest of team fights for the scraps - No word of a lie, in an entire season if your kid gets put in the outfield, they may get one ball all season long... How is it 2026 and at rec level we're doing this mickey mouse sh*t? Let the kids play and learn. Get them all reps, switch positions, stop trying to win at all costs.
The sad reality of 90% of youth sports is that the kids who are already the best usually get the most reps. Go watch rec baseball. They put the best kid on the mound, then they put the second-best kid at first base, (typically one of them just so happens to be the coach's kid), which are the two spots that are going to get all the action. So the kids who are already the best are also the ones getting all the reps. The kids who struggle get stuck in the outfield where, no exaggeration, they might see one ball an entire season, because most kids aren’t strong enough to hit it out there. And then later on everyone acts confused about why those kids don’t develop a passion for sports.

Had a parent tell me, “I know my son isn’t the best player on this team right now, but I want him around better players and better competition. Maybe one day it pushes him to become the best.” What a breath of fresh air. Sometimes development means being uncomfortable.

Tip for parents with kids in sports: Don't let coaches force your kid into a position just because they happen to "fit" the role at that time and place. I.e. they put your kid as goalie just cause he's good at it, or he's tall. Or your kid gets placed at center in Volleyball/basketball just because they're tall for their age. Might even make your kid look good in the present, but it will back-fire in the long-run

The reframe: parents influence these aspects MUCH more than coaches. The sooner you level up as a parent in this regard, the sooner you'll see your kid get better both on the field, and as a person
Dear Parents: Please understand that your athletes coaches are not miracle workers. Sure, some may be better at what they do than others but in the end it will come down to an athletes innate ability (what they were born with), their love for the game, their level of focus, their aptitude (ability to apply what they are learning), their level of mental toughness, how much work they put in on their own time and their personal desire to just get better. Teach your athlete responsibility and accountability. To never rely on others to help them get better. To be a student of the game. To seek out those with more experience and pick their brains and to look for ways to get better everyday.

Things like street soccer, road hockey, or baseball in the neighborhood ballpark allowed this Nowadays kids are either at one of their 50 weekly activities, or inside on a screen
You know how when you were a kid you’d watch a pro athlete do a sick move and be like “I could do that shit” and then go outside and practice it until you got it? You should still do that

A lot of people are out there "settling" or completely giving up...in both their personal & professional lives. No one gets it all immediately. You find a path. You try. You mess up, and you get back in the game. Getting what you want is often a test of endurance.

A little club in Ecuador practically overnight became a world powerhouse soccer club, producing world class players, and single-handedly making them a top national team as well. One of their keys? Teaching kids about extreme ownership. The most powerful mindset you can have is that everything that happens to you is your fault. Extremely hard to commit to because it strips the excuses away and makes you feel naked, but fully worth it.
Sad to say, but most unsuccessful people simply don't deserve success. When I was younger, I used to think people get arrogant when they achieve things in life, but the reality is it just happens that they see what it takes to make it, and they see that most people aren't willing to do shit to get the things they say they want. For most unlucky people chose to be unlucky and thus deserve their misery.

Over-bearing = fragility in the parent
Often when a parent is over-bearing in sports, (and in life), it's because they are protecting their OWN fragility... They can't stand watching little Johnny struggle, and in turn jump in at every opportunity. And of course, this leads to little Johnny missing out on all the key moments to develop grit, ownership, and perseverance. Mommy and Daddy snatched it away the second things got "iffy"

And at this level they aren’t good at making it fun Way too big of a field, too many kids per side, and long lines lead to kids not only not getting better, but finding soccer extremely boring, (a kid can play a game and only touch the ball like 5 times) Which in turn leads to the typical rec person saying soccer is not fun
Fix what’s happening with recreational soccer in America, and you change the trajectory of the sport. Nearly every club in the US has a recreational program, and in many cases, it has the largest number of participants. Yet these programs are often coached by volunteer parents rather than qualified, paid coaches. That tells you how the system values this stage of development. Too often, Rec is treated as a waiting room before players are old enough to enter the “real” development pathway. The problem starts with a fundamental belief that young children are too young to develop meaningful technical skills, so the priority becomes simply letting them “play and have fun.” But these early years are exactly when technical foundations can be built. If we want to change this trajectory, we need to start where soccer starts: at home. A Soccer Starts at Home approach means educating and inspiring parents to become part of their child’s soccer development, not by becoming coaches, but by creating opportunities to play, experiment, practice and enjoy the ball together. Then we can transform Rec soccer from a holding place into the foundation of American soccer development. Change the foundation, and you change the trajectory.

Nobody's collapsing from working too hard. Look around. The average guy watches more content in a week than his grandfather consumed in a year. Netflix, highlights, podcasts, reels, a match on Sunday, another guy's business on Monday. Every hour of it is spent watching someone else do something. Hustle culture at its worst makes a man tired. Entertainment makes him a spectator of his own life. At least the tired guy has something to show for it.
Hustle culture isn't destroying men. Entertainment culture is.

I don't understand the "stay in your lane", "stick to sports" people. As I teach anyone I coach, we're people first. Athletics is just something we do.

I’m convinced that the most important skill in life is the ability to just figure it out. You’ll face a lot of problems that you have no idea how to solve. There’s nothing more valuable than knowing you’ll see it through. That you’ll handle it. Do the work. Get it done. Repeat.

Unorganized play leads to OWNERSHIP When your kid has zero autonomy, it eventually leads to "I don't care anymore" The good news is you can guide your kid towards the right pathways while still allowing them to own it. Not easy, but worth it...
The ruining of recreational sports is a significant issue in our current child mental health crisis. Kids need developmental spaces where parental driven competition isn’t front and center. We traded true development for profits…

Staying loose is one of the most powerful things you can do in sports yet one of the hardest The body tenses up because it’s our natural reaction But letting yourself become loose, lets the subconscious take over which is crucial for high end performance

If you want to enjoy more, simply consume less. Enjoyment is about comparison and expectation. And your brain is too adaptive for your own good. This is why you enjoyed movies more when you had less. Movies were better when you had 3 to choose from. Food tasted better when you could only eat what your mom made for you. Relationships were stronger when you only had a handful of prospects. You are hypersaturating your choice parameters. Abundance is now cheap. There is a concerted effort to keep you chasing the dragon of choice, but true happiness is simple. Simply do less, and you will experience more.
