This is not an attempt to compare the conflict in Gaza to that in Sudan. Rather, this reflection seeks to draw attention to Sudan, a crisis that erupted nearly six months before the escalation in Gaza, yet has received a fraction of the global attention.  borg.re/articles/ideasmemo/w…

We are pleased to announce the Top 6 Finalists of the inaugural edition of The Policy Compete 2026. Out of a highly competitive field of submissions, these six finalists distinguished themselves through the analytical depth, originality, and quality of their policy thinking on this edition's question: "Is Nigeria a Welfare State?" The final round date will be announced shortly. We look forward to seeing these finalists make their case. Congratulations to all six.

With technology and its complexities, the U.S. Congress enacted industry-specific legislations due to growing national and consumer security concerns. This led to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Privacy Act, and Title V of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act borg.re/articles/ideasmemo/a…

Allow African nations to retain meaningful control over their citizens' most sensitive personal information, while enabling U.S. companies to operate within these jurisdictions on predictable, mutually agreed terms, offering a more durable middle path. borg.re/articles/ideasmemo/a…

A BRICS membership could present a new opportunity for economic partnerships for Nigeria. Multilateralism would open doors to a synergy with other nations on projects and infrastructure; doors which would have been difficult to access bilaterally. borg.re/articles/ideasmemo/a…

Great. Agree to hybrid approaches, particularly seeing how in real time trade dependencies even with middle powers expose defense weaknesses. I also believe for African states, data sovereignty has to come from a line of defense, and communicating strongly in that regard.

Policy frameworks alone cannot resolve workforce shortages. Real progress depends on sustained investment, coordination across levels of government, reliable data systems and meaningful improvements in working conditions for health professionals. borg.re/articles/ideasmemo/m…

Nigeria recorded over 35,000 satellite-detected fires in a single year, the 2nd-highest in West Africa. Wildfire rarely makes headlines here, but the economic, health & climate costs are real. New piece on what Nigeria can learn from global practice: borg.re/articles/ideasmemo/w…

4,193 doctors & dentists left Nigeria in 2024 alone. Over 43,000 health workers migrated between 2023-24. With a doctor-to-population ratio of 1:5,000 (WHO recommends 1:600), the stakes of workforce migration policy are enormous. borg.re/articles/ideasmemo/m…

The Electoral Act 2026 finally gives BVAS & IReV legal force, but a vague "communication failure" clause could let manual result forms replace electronic transmission. Civil society groups warn this could reopen the door to the opacity IReV was built to close. borg.re/articles/white-paper…

Wildfire policy in Nigeria can't be separated from farmer-herder conflict: herders burn grass for fresh growth, farmers burn fields to clear land, and disputes over fire damage can spark bigger tensions. A purely technical fix won't be enough. borg.re/articles/ideasmemo/w…

In the north, prolonged droughts, declining vegetation cover, and unsustainable land-use practices contribute to land degradation and desertification. Studies of the frontline state’s estimate that around half of the soil landscape has experienced degradation borg.re/articles/ideasmemo/i…

Deforestation and forest degradation remain significant environmental challenges across Nigeria. Nigeria lost over 463,000 hectares of forest land between 2000 and 2010 alone, much of it converted to shrub, grassland, and cropland. borg.re/articles/ideasmemo/i…

Adaptation has relied on engineered solutions like drainage, dams, and coastal defences. Necessary but not enough to match the scale of the risk. Nature-Based Solutions (protecting, restoring, and sustainably managing ecosystems) offer a cost-effective way to close the gap.🧵2/3
