There I saw one I knew, and called him, crying: Stetson! You who were with me in the ships at Mylae. That corpse you planted last year in your garden: Has it begun to sprout? Will it bloom this year? Or has the sudden frost disturbed its bed? Oh, keep the dog far hence, that's friend to men, Or with his nails, he'll dig it up again. You! hypocrite lecteur!—mon semblable,—mon frère!

Being part of South Africa's most sheltered demographic gives you about as much insight into apartheid's machinations as a Sea Point chihuahua has into the lives of Yellowstone wolves.
As a chick who grew up in South Africa and if you are in the slightest bit arsed, here’s some education for you. Apartheid South Africa and the Israel–Palestine conflict are not the same thing. South Africa’s apartheid was a single-state system of explicit racial laws denying citizenship, votes, and rights to Black people within one sovereign country. Israel–Palestine is a territorial and national conflict, not a racial hierarchy. Arab Israelis vote, serve in parliament, and have full legal rights. Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank are not Israeli citizens but live under different authorities, Hamas in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority in parts of the West Bank. Calling it “apartheid” isn’t just wrong, it cheapens real apartheid and misrepresents a complex national conflict. The two situations are morally, legally, and historically different. Pretending otherwise just distorts history and is a lie. Just saying … for the MPs at the back who don’t know what they are talking about.

wonder if the dudes playing this otherwise unremarkable tied game could somehow sense that it would be historically meaningful in a way unfathomable to them at the time. like, did they intuit the ghosts of all these future robots bearing silent witness

Goodbye uptick in vampires movies representing economic collapse and greed. Hello uptick in Frankenstein movies representing fear of man’s hubris and the fear of innovation without consideration.

every time i have attempted to use ai/llms for any purpose i come away feeling unclean in the same way that some people feel uneasy handling dead bodies, i feel uneasy handling something that has never been alive but simulates life

“Ons dak nie Ons Phola hier.” (We are not moving). Slogan used in Sophiatown to resist forced removals of black people. Sophiatown was renamed Triomf (Triumph) when it was bulldozed and rebuilt for ‘whites only’. Our history needs to be told to understand the present & future

9/ We got records from an internal State Dept. panel showing how much deference the U.S. gives Israel, from the killing of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh to kids who said they were abused in Israeli detention.

I respect folks who spend meaningful time in the Cape Town Archives so much - because there are accounts of the Cape as far back as the early 1400s, in letters, diary entries, memories etc. and they are not only by colonial masters. Cape Town is truly not what you think it is.
