Comms folks think the press corps is only useful for speading their preferred message, but the real value we bring is that we challenge and question their message for the public's benefit. Which, of course, they don't like. Easier to go on a Youtube show with no fact checking
This is 100% what’s happening in Maryland, especially in the state house, where new press rules seem to appear out of thin air: poynter.org/reporting-editin…

Student journalist Cat Murphy, reporting for @CNSmd, was threatened with prosecution by @RepAndyHarrisMD while recording him during a news conference Tuesday in Cambridge, MD.
She later told CNN, “I was focused on doing my job”:

Proud of our @CNSmd reporter @IAMCATMURPHY today.
Merrill College students know their rights as journalists.
"Cat Murphy is a master's student at the University of Maryland, credentialed as a reporter for our Capital News Service and doing the job we teach our students to do. Cat recorded openly in a public space alongside other news outlets, and that is her legal right," Dean Rafael Lorente (@DeanLorente) said. "I'm proud of how she handled herself in a difficult situation."

Rep. Andy Harris invited press to a post-debate news conference. He refused to answer my question about why he decided to participate and singled out a student journalist, moments after defending his First Amendment right to freely express himself.

More on this story from @BaltimoreBanner reporters tonight at 6 @wjz
Nine-year-old Tristan King has been missing since Sept. 24, longer than any other child his age in Maryland, through one of Baltimore’s coldest winters on record.
Missing posters show a blurry photo of a little boy with curly hair and deep-brown eyes. It says he was last seen wearing a white sweater and blue NBA pajama pants.
What it doesn’t say is that the past year of Tristan’s life was a procession of misery and mishaps, or that red tape and mistakes hampered the agencies responsible for finding him. buff.ly/PbuxluN
