Have been doing @brymes #languagediversity pie charts since 2015 when I learned so much in my work with @kate_anna - and every year the students come up with even more complex and sophisticated analyses of their language use.

Polls taken in the last six months paint a clear picture of the coming storm. @saletan looked at the numbers and public opinion ahead of the ruling. Republicans may have gotten what they wanted, but may have to pay a political cost

I was so shocked to see this posted on Trump’s Truth Social today that I screenshotted it because I figured there was no way it was going to stay up. Just checked back - it’s been deleted.

The LSA does not endorse "National Grammar Day." It is wrongheaded, linguistic disinformation, and antithetical to every sound principle of linguistic science. Join the LSA to help combat uninformed linguistic elitism.

Do you say ‘bus’ or ‘buz’? It turns out people don’t always say what you think they do…

Do you say 'bus' or 'buz'? If you say 'buz', our analysis suggests that people might assume you're from Oldham. As shown on this map, respondents were most likely to mention people using this feature when describing the Oldham accent/dialect.

ALT Map of Greater Manchester, divided and labelled by borough, and coloured on a scale from purple to yellow according to where more people described the accent/dialect in the area as pronouncing 'bus' as 'buzz', with yellow being the highest. The most 'yellow' area is the borough of Oldham, followed by Bolton, Bury, and then Wigan and Rochdale. The other areas are all purple.

How do you address a diverse group of individuals? I have noticed people use, "Hey guys", "Hey team", "Hey Friends" and I think we need to find another way to phrase a group. Would love to know your thoughts.

I'm late to the party, but just blown away by the preface to @brymes' How We Talk About Language. Gotta make every student AND colleague read it, gotta quote it in all my syllabi, gotta... go read the rest of the book!

Thank you @brymes for that stimulating talk yesterday on The Ironic Spirit and Citizen Sociolinguistics. Got to really geek out & felt hopeful about more academics valuing and respecting the rich linguistic insights that can come from the everyday communication of 'citizens'.
