The BUFFER+ project, thanks to the participation of The Rivers Trust and @AC3Atlantique at the European Carbon Farming Summit, will support high level discussions during a session onΒ income opportunities from peatland rewetting.

After the expedition to farmers and other stakeholders in the agricultural chain, we now have everyone together to discuss results and first conclusions. How to facilitate change and innovation and offer perspective for (young) farmers?

Wet and healthy peatlands have a strong natural potential to save carbon and buffer water. That's why BUFFER+ partners work on peatland restoration, business models and governance together with many stakeholders. But how do we involve them in the best way?
Workshop partnermeeting
On the 2nd day of the BUFFER+ Partnermeeting we enjoyed interesting talks on laboratory techniques used in the peat-free substrate activities, on digital twinning models, and a guided tour at the premises of Γkowerk Emden on nature education, with an apple tasting!
During the BUFFER+ meeting in Weser-Ems region partners visited a tree nursery to hear about the use of peat-free potting soils in the production, and the Westermoor raised bog area characterized by centuries of #peat extraction. now in the process of renaturation and rewetting.

ALT Partners learn about the past and future of peat mining in Germany and Europe and the challenges and successes of the peatland rewetting processes. All participants during the excursion hadthe chance to learn about the success achieved in renaturation so far and benefited from proven best-practice solutions. These insights can be applied to their own restoration projects.
Yesterday the #Groningen partners (@NetGroeningen) went on a field visit to multiple farmers and companies in the agricultural sector. Conversations gave new insights in the developments of new business models. #Groningen @Middengroningen @hanze @GemWkwartier #peatlandsmatter

A couple of partners showed us some good examples of #communityengagement processes. See the partners of @hanze #TerraMBO, who organise expeditions to young farmers in the area, to map their expectations and future direction #peatland

Take Ireland, where fisherman advocate for change due to dwindling fish populations, while farmers explore innovative opportunities like grass-to-gas conversion for sustainable income. How we deal with the differences?

Discussion of the governance of BUFFER+-regions gave some insights. For instance for the Netherlands: Nature organizations wield influence over governance decisions, necessitating a shift from old systems to adapt to changing needs. β at Meerhout, BelgiΓ«
