ALT FarmPEAT EOP Conference 2024. Future Payments for Farmed Peat Soils Panel Discussion. Captured live by Ruth Graham. - "There's momentum now...it needs to be kept going!" - Match-making farms & investors. - Score system (it's about putting a value on it): Ecological integrity + hydrology + damaging activities. - Targets -> we're already seeing benefits -> hugely efficient - Co-benefits: A bundle of deliverables (biodiversity + carbon + water) - Farmers shouldn't need to take all the risk -> potential for corporates and their social responsibility These types of projects would benefit from longer term commitment -> they require investment. The FarmPEAT Project is an EIP (European Innovation Partnership) Locally Led Scheme being administered by Nature Based Agri Solutions Ltd. The Project is funded by the Dept. of Agriculture, Food and the Marine as part of Ireland's Rural Development Programme 2014-2020.

ALT FarmPEAT EOP Conference 2024. Lived Experience of Farming on Peat Soils. Captured live by Ruth Graham. - The 'Breathing' Bog - "With FarmPEAT, we're being brought along" - not 'Them & Us', we're in this together! - "If it's going to work, it has to work for farmers" - Pippa Hackett - Knowledge Transfer: Actions should be based on scientific evidence. - It's connected - "We can't go back increasing production while neglecting the environment". - Importance of keeping income steady - a balance. Good for us and good for the environment = good for succession. - There are a diverse range of farmers involved in the project (age categories & farm types" - Talk to people one-to-one and meet on the farm. ALT FarmPEAT EOP Conference 2024. Science of Farmed Peat Soils Panel Discussion. Captured live by Ruth Graham. - We have no time to waste -> we need to have a sense of urgency. - We can solve problems at a local level with the complex science and the will and knowledge of communities. - Water quality, biodiversity, climate. "It's all about keeping it wet" to retain moisture and reduce degradation. - Big impact: Raising the water table by 10cm can reduce carbon emissions by 3 tonnes per hectare per year = No effort too small - every cm counts! - Peaty, drained soils are a disappearing asset for farmers = slow it down with water table management. - Data collection -> generating models -> getting a broader picture. - There's a lot to take into account - there's no one size fits all, every farm is different.
