Colonialists may have exploited Africa but they built the infrastructure and systems that African countries rely on to this day. Russia may not be 'colonising' Africa but they are exploiting it and building nothing. Mbappé never explicitly called Mao Zedong a dictator. The meme was birthed on the internet, and I can bet my ass that Mbappé does not even know who Mao Zedong is, let alone his significance to the Communist revolution in China. He simply assumed the person they superimposed his face onto was a dictator, hence the phrase "Chinese dictator."
To those of us on the Left who are doubling down to defend China's reaction as justified: please stop it, it is embarrassing. China committed a massive PR blunder here, and there are no two ways about it.

You are asking me why I use western technology services, but you are not asking the west why they rely on critical minerals from Africa for chips powering these technologies.
You are asking me why I use Western social media platforms, but when we build our own, the same West will not leave our market. They would arrive with state-backed financial muscles and put local products out of business. Nigeria had local streaming services, Netflix and Spotify came and stifled them.
And before you say, “but what are you doing, and why are your leaders not stopping them?” Well, isn’t that what we are preaching? We want leaders who would stand their ground and say NO, not puppets. If the leaders are not ready, as it seems, we want citizens who can rise up and seize sovereignty over every pillars of our society.
