The fate of AB 1383 now lies with the Governor. Expanding pension benefits could harm cities already struggling to deliver essential services. Cal Cities is urging Gov. Gavin Newsom to veto the bill. đźš« bit.ly/3TftApU

LAUSD should not be struggling given its declining enrollment & greater state funding, says @marcjoffe. Yet the board approved a budget that spends more than the district takes in and ratified new labor agreements whose costs the county specifically cited as a driver of the coming insolvency.

A billionaire wealth tax is presented as a simple, one-time solution for raising substantial revenue from a small number of taxpayers. But the data point to a very different outcome: lower-than-projected revenue, a shrinking tax base, and lasting damage to investment, employment, and economic growth. June 14 is the anniversary of the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt. But how many California students could explain the Bear Flag Republic or how California became a state? We have no idea because California eliminated statewide testing in history and social studies. ow.ly/y6wa50ZbyHr

Every member of the #caleg that is supporting AB 1383 needs to know that the cost will obliterate local government budgets. This bill needs to stop.
The California Public Employees' Retirement System has $179 billion in unfunded liabilities. This new tool, CalPERS Monitor, examines how it got that debt, how a current legislative proposal could make things worse, and where to go from here. buff.ly/iMF5PhU

Not much difference between this and southern states prior to the Civil War claiming they could nullify acts of Congress.
NEW: CA gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer (D) releases an immigration platform that is radically left of Gov. Newsom. It includes: - Abolish ICE - Put ICE agents in jail & “treat them like the mob”. - Bring those “kidnapped & detained by ICE back home.” - Give CA AG power to imprison ICE agents & their leadership. - Taxpayer funded legal representation & support for illegal aliens. - Ignore a SCOTUS ruling that allows ICE to utilize to use race, language, job, and location to contribute to “reasonable suspicion” for immigration arrests, and instead, “California should take matters into our own hands and extend legal protections to its residents, despite the federal governments failure.” “This is about our right as a state to protect our residents,” Steyer says.

"Congratulations to @PaulJonna and @ThomasMoreSoc on their landmark SCOTUS win. This is a major victory for California parents and their constitutional right to be the primary decision-makers in their children’s lives." — Emily Rae, President, California Justice Center
🚨 BREAKING: The Supreme Court just handed a historic victory to parents over California's secret gender transition policies today, ruling 6-2 in our case Mirabelli v. Bonta. DECISION AND REACTIONS: thomasmoresociety.org/news/u… California required schools to secretly facilitate children's gender transitions without telling parents. Teachers were forced to use different names and pronouns behind parents' backs. One family only found out their daughter had been transitioning at school after she attempted suicide. Today the Court said: enough. The justices found that California's secrecy regime likely violates both the First Amendment and the Fourteenth Amendment's protection of parental rights. The Court held that California "cut out the primary protectors of children's best interests: their parents." What makes this decision groundbreaking: the Court reaffirmed that parents—not the state—have the constitutional right to direct the upbringing of their children and to participate in decisions about their children's mental health. Even Justice Kagan in dissent said she has "no doubt" parents have these rights and that California "could have crossed the constitutional line." The class-wide injunction blocking California's policies is back in effect for a statewide class of parents. This is a historic just a win for parents and a precedent that puts every secret gender transition policy in America on notice. @PaulJonna @peterbreen

New: On CA Capitol Annex, Gov. Newsom said “as a taxpayer” he’d “like to know” about costs being kept from the public. Turns out, his office’s Director of Operations has been on a panel that meets regularly and makes final decisions on the project in private.

Nice try. This is existing money, already allocated to existing services. Simply saying this money can also be spent on Prop 36 doesn’t magically create more money to fund those existing services AND the newly mandated Prop 36 requirements. counties.org/news-and-media-…
NEW: @CAGovernor Gavin Newsom just announced the state is awarding a new round of funding — $127 million — to local governments to support their implementation of substance abuse treatment and mental health service efforts, including for Prop 36. This builds on California’s multi-billion dollar investments in behavioral health services to treat people experiencing mental health and substance abuse disorders — with $617 million distributed to local communities thanks to Prop 47 savings. NOTE: Prop 36 created a “treatment-mandated felony,” BUT NO ACTUAL TREATMENT. It aimed to coerce repeat drug offenders into behavioral health treatment by using the threat of felony sanctions, but DID NOT provide funding to develop the required treatment plans or provide treatment. REMINDER: Governor Newsom has been focused on building the necessary behavioral health programs since long before Prop 36.

By my count, CA has one of the highest lobbyist to legislator ratios: 120 legislators 3,245 registered lobbyists Roughly 27:1 ratio of lobbyist to legislator NY appears to be the only higher state at 29:1 Congress is 24:1, but other states are much lower: MA 8:1, TX 11:1, MI 10:1

California state lawmakers proposed increasing taxes and fees more than $14.4 billion a year during the first five months of the 2025-26 legislative session, the California Tax Foundation reported today. caltax.org/foundation/report… The new taxes and fees proposed by lawmakers include charges that would add to consumers’ costs for gasoline, prepaid telephones, public transportation tickets for specified sporting events in Los Angeles and Santa Clara counties, purchases of many items in the areas of Monterey and San Luis Obispo, and many more.
