"Poohsticks" - oil on canvas (8"x10") I forgot to post the finished version! I delivered this to my mom when I was in NYC a few weeks ago. I probably spent at least 15 hours on this. it brought back a lot of memories, mostly good ones, but it's always going to be complicated.
work in progress - commission for my mom (it’s me and my siblings) 8x10” oil on canvas I think I’m kinda good at this

Sometimes your wife can be grumpy with you because she trusts you with challenging feelings. There is a lot of pressure on women to be genial.

Photobucket sends me one of these shitty emails every other day for months then makes me pay to see my 20-year old photos. Well I guess they have stored them for that long!

Marriage is hard—life is hard—and I love my marriage. Even when we fight we’re on the same team!!

yes fwiw by happy marriage I don't mean it's all sunshine and rainbows all the time. just that you're a team against it all, basically

(Also we almost never “fight,” people say that’s bad but it’s yet another piece of advice that gets misapplied. Even when one or both of us are upset, we ALWAYS know it’s us vs. the problem and it ALWAYS brings us closer)

I don't think people understand how much entertainment of the past was just going to your friend's house. Like play some cards. Have a beer. Sing some songs. Maybe dance. All for free (besides $1 for the beer). But that's not good enough for anyone anymore
We CANNOT even afford hobbies. We CANNOT afford to go out with friends. We CANNOT afford to exist anywhere outside our homes. They then call it a mental health crisis. It's not. It's an affordability crisis.

Got out of the shower this morning to find that my husband had framed a bunch of my canvas paper paintings (and some important posters) for my birthday. Then spent some time configuring the gallery wall behind my desk. 🥰

my husband wholeheartedly believes in my goodness, so much so that he sees my faults as unavoidable extensions of my virtues. i suspect this sort of stance towards one’s partner and children is one of the best things you can do for your happiness.

It’s my birthday! If I’ve had an impact on you, would you share it here? I’m so curious, but it always felt intrusive to ask!

A lot of stuff that has made my married life much happier and more awesome sounds either unbearably generic ("make time for each other!") or hyperspecific and useless to anyone else

Cats require attunement. People who don’t like cats are often revealing something about their relational capacity.
There is something innately trustworthy about men who love cats

If you don’t think you need a loving partner/relationship in your life it’s because you’ve never had one We are not meant to be alone. We do not reach our highest self alone Having been hurt by a bad relationship doesn’t make the above not true

"Productivity" was always my fuel—everything must serve a purpose. E.g. media consumption must be justified by connection or self-improvement. My husband said: "Coal fueled the Industrial Revolution, but we don't have to keep using it." Much to consider...
