“Patients need doctors and doctors need jobs” Today, we've written to @wesstreeting to ask the Government to resume talks – and work with us to agree a viable deal on pay and jobs. Without movement on both, we’ll be left with no choice but to return to the picket lines.

I hope we see a robust response from @HNEHealth, as many would imagine that this message would be indicative of a deeper culture that devalues frontline medical staff. @ASMOFnsw
What the hell ? Hunter & New England local health district covering themselves in glory via email sent to all doctors in training…

The whole point of @gmcuk is to keep patients safe from harm. But what if, like OFWAT & OFCOM, it’s turning into another politically-neutered, failing regulator? I cannot stand silently by as @gmcuk fails patients in the PA debacle. Here’s why 👇 app.prospectmagazine.co.uk/s…

Still in awe of the paramedics who somehow got an IV in me after I was down for >10 minutes due to cardiac arrest. It was 4am, dark, and their hazmat suit face shields were fogging up. Sounds impossible.
In the PARAMEDIC-3 trial involving adults with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, an intraosseous-first strategy for vascular access did not result in a higher incidence of 30-day survival than an intravenous-first strategy. Full trial results: nej.md/48uYv4A #RESUS24

Asking medical students to volunteer doing things with little /no educational value to compensate for the failure of a service contracted to a private provider is unacceptable. They should be offered a wage for this work, and preferably the bill should be paid by @SYNLAB_UK
🚨 NEW: Medical students have been drafted onto wards in the wake of the NHS cyber attack. They will work as floor walkers, hand delivering blood tests to and from the crippled pathology labs. Bosses at @GSTTnhs say disruption will last "at least 2 weeks" 1/2

This video of an AA at a @gmcuk event about the loopholes in their scope of practice, apparently allowing AAs to provide remote site anaesthesia (IR) with distant supervision and up to 4:1 supervision, deserves more views. Obvious patient safety risk! youtu.be/VQjrDFIvvg8?si=ln5y…

Lots of interest in this paper published in an RCS England journal looking at the safety of a (single) surgical care practitioner performing lap choles - a 2 thought thread 🧵 publishing.rcseng.ac.uk/doi/…

1) Is it acceptable that no ethics review was required for a study examining the safety of an intervention (in this case an alternative workforce providing surgery)? Was this not a novel solution with an unclear safety profile?

2) This study is n=1, with no comparison data for their patient population. Despite this, the conclusion states that lap choles can be "performed safely and effectively with low complication rates" by SCPs. Is this a valid conclusion, generalisable to all SCPs? Probably not.

We have written to @gmcuk to raise our serious concerns about the recent suspension of Dr Sarah Benn. There must be an urgent review of the basis on which Dr Benn found herself in front of a medical tribunal.

This is an important thread. Rosie describes lucidly the feelings of her cohort of anaesthetic trainees who were basically thrown under a bus whilst another group of associate professionals were ushered into a limousine to get trained instead. Sadly. Her story is common.
My perspective on AAs; a 🧵 I was an ANP before medical school and am now a specialty doctor in anaesthetics. I work with 2 qualified AAs who are excellent, I am often asked for my opinion given my background, so here it is a long thread including my own story.

When our regulator distorts what is meant by "medical practitioner", as in what the public (as well as anyone internationally) would understand to mean a qualified doctor, it will lead to significant confusion for patients and further devalue the medical profession in the UK.
Interesting debate on titles- The Medical Act (1983) almost always refers to ‘medical practitioners’ not doctors (or medical professionals). #GoodMedicalPractice2024 means AAs and PAs once in UK regulation will have to follow the same high professional standards as doctors.
