Steak of the Day: the Porterhouse 🥩
Two steaks in one. The bone splits a big NY strip on one side from a thick piece of filet on the other. It's like a T-bone, but with a much bigger filet, and that's why steakhouses serve it for two.
Cal's tip: the filet cooks faster than the strip, so keep the filet side away from the hottest part of the grill. Pull it at medium-rare, rest it 5 minutes, then carve both sides off the bone and slice.
Strip or filet, which side are you going for first?

X AI ALGORITHM UPDATE 🚨
X just confirmed in their open source algorithm how small accounts get found by strangers now: posts people read all the way through (so write posts worth reading to the end)
tl;dr:
- today X confirmed in their changelog that it picks posts for people who don't follow you partly by how often they get read to the end
- X also got much better at predicting how long you'll spend on a post
- X put both in writing today, they went live earlier this month
- no score changes this time
lesson learned: write posts people finish. Your first line gets the tap, the rest has to hold them.
full details:
- X said it out loud
X keeps a changelog at the top of its open source code. Today it added two lines about changes it quietly made earlier this month.
Live since October 8th: its ranking does a much better job of guessing how long you'll spend on each post.
Live since October 13th: the part that finds posts for people who don't follow you is "now also trained to surface posts that people read all the way through."
So the news today is X confirming it. The changes have been working for 2 weeks.
(I check the open source algo daily with Claude and share updates with you)
- Why that matters if you're small
When you're small, most of your new readers are people who don't follow you yet. That's exactly the part X changed. Posts that get read to the end now have a better shot at reaching them.
- It lines up with the numbers
Earlier this month likes went to 0.66, the time-spent score went up 50%, and staying 10+ seconds after tapping into a post is worth 0.4. Same direction every time: X wants posts people actually read.
- What didn't change
Your new posts still get their extra push in the first 2 hours and first 200 views, and they're no longer cut first. No scores moved this time.
Here's a recap of what you should be doing:
- posts people finish now win twice, in X's ranking and in how X finds you new readers
- each like is worth 0.66, the highest it's been
- the longer people stay on your post the better, that score went up 50% this month
- 10 seconds on your post after a tap adds another 0.4
- new posts get their extra push in the first 2 hours and first 200 views, so post while your audience is awake
- that push goes to the new post whose early viewers like it most
- under 50K followers, the push can put one new original around 16th in a feed
- copy link shares top the whole list at 20
- a reply, a quote or a DM share is worth 5 each
- mutuals replying to each other score 20, so follow back people who keep showing up
- only original posts reach people who don't follow you
- like number 1 and like number 32 both open new paths to strangers
- one great post per feed beats two, the second one only counts 62%
- for the video lists, videos still need to run longer than 10 seconds
- someone following you because of a post gives it 4 more
- a badly rated site linked in your pinned post can label your whole account for 7 days
What you should NOT be doing:
- a post people open and leave fast scores just 0.3 for the tap
- video gets no special treatment, 0.02 to open it and 0 to watch it
- each likely "not interested" now costs -52.27, so off-topic posts can hurt
- 3am posting wastes your 2 hour window
- replies and reposts never leave your follower circle
- an insult label hides your post from everyone who doesn't follow you
- a low quality or misinfo label adds a warning and blocks likes and shares from non-followers
- 3 adult images or videos out of your last 5 posts and the account gets a label
- videos get checked for hidden content at 64 likes and again at 512
- stacking your own replies under a big account's post can wipe out their score
- a single account label ends your reach to non-followers
- keep badly rated links off your pinned post
- posting the same wording again can get flagged as copypasta
- tagging strangers next to a low quality link is a known spam pattern
- engagement bait gets labeled whatever your size
- back-to-back posts compete with each other in the same feed
- piles of hashtags don't help
- bookmarks score nothing
- once a post is 2 days old, For You stops showing it
Right in the middle
🤖 WHAT IF YOU COULD SIT DOWN WITH 5 GENERATIONS OF AI?
The first one could barely answer a question.
The second learned to have a conversation.
The third? That's where we are today. 👀
The fourth can do things we're only beginning to imagine.
And the fifth… might change everything we know about intelligence.
Now imagine all five sitting in the same room, talking about humanity's future.
Here's the question:
Are we creating a tool that will change the world… or the beginning of something we don't fully understand yet?

PHILLY IS HERE
Barclay Prime · Philadelphia · A-
Today we're reviewing Barclay Prime in Philadelphia. My overall grade is an A-.
This is the strongest beef program in Philly. The Prime ribeye is dry-aged 40 days, and you get 18 ounces for $89. There's a 35-day porterhouse at $145, plus named Wagyu from Snake River Farms and Black Hawk Farms. That's real sourcing, not a sticker on a menu.
The room feels like a private library, and the wine list matches it. Critics love both.
What keeps it from a straight A is the bill, plus a $140 cheesesteak that's more stunt than steak.
Order: the 40-day dry-aged ribeye, medium-rare.
Skip: the cheesesteak. You're in Philly, so get a real one tomorrow for $15.
Every Philly review is on calssteaks.com.
Steak of the Day: the Denver Steak 🥩
Cut from the chuck, the Denver comes out of the shoulder muscles that do the least work. That means real marbling, big beefy flavor, and a price well under a ribeye.
How I cook it:
Salt it an hour ahead. Get the pan or grill ripping hot, 3 to 4 minutes a side, pull at 130°F, rest 5 minutes.
Slice it against the grain. Skip that and it'll chew like a boot.
Best steak you've never ordered.

Cal's Review: Yukon, Redmond, WA (near Seattle) 🥩
The Beecher's founder opened a steakhouse with no chairs, just affordable wagyu and a counter to stand at.
What I like: a steakhouse that skips the white tablecloths and puts the money into the beef. Nobody's charging you $70 for a fancy room.
What I'm watching: "wagyu" covers everything from full-blood Japanese A5 to an American cross. Affordable wagyu should say which one it is on the menu.
Standing works for a quick wagyu fix. It won't work for a three-hour steak dinner, and Yukon isn't pretending it will.
Grade: B, for now. If the beef backs up the word on the menu, this goes up.
Those who want to know the secret sauce!
X ALGORITHM UPDATE 🚨
X just stopped cutting new posts first, and that should help small accounts (I check it daily with Claude and share updates worth sharing with you)
tl;dr:
- X can only check 2,800 posts each time you open your feed
- new posts used to be last in line, so they got cut first
- now everything gets cut equally, new posts included
- posts labeled low quality or misinfo now show a warning, and people can't like, reply or share them
- no score changes this time
lesson learned: your new posts now get a fair chance to be seen. Your first 2 hours still matter most.
full details:
- How it worked until this week
Every time someone opens For You, X collects around 3,700 posts it could show them: posts from people they follow, popular posts, posts liked by similar people, and brand new posts.
But X only has time to check 2,800 of them.
So it just took the first 2,800 in line. Brand new posts were at the back of the line. When there were too many, they were the ones left out... and a post that never gets checked can't be shown.
- What changed
Now everything gets cut by the same amount. 25% too many? Every type of post loses 25%, new posts included. Nobody goes first.
- Why small accounts should care
Those brand new posts are under 2 hours old, with under 8 likes and under 500 views. That's where most posts from smaller accounts are.
My read: they now get a fair chance instead of being cut first. How often X actually hits the 2,800 limit isn't in the code, so I can't tell you how big the difference is.
- Low quality and misinfo posts now show a warning
If X labels your post as low quality or misinformation, people who don't follow you see a warning on it, and they can't like, reply, repost, bookmark or share it. The code doesn't say what gets a post that label.
Here's a recap of what you should be doing:
- a new post gets its extra push only in its first 2 hours and first 200 views, so post when your people are online
- likes carry more weight than ever at 0.66 each
- people sticking around pays, the time-spent score is 50% higher than two weeks ago
- a read of 10+ seconds after someone opens your post adds 0.4
- the boost favors the post with the best like rate from its first viewers
- accounts up to 50K can get one fresh original lifted to roughly 16th
- nothing beats a copy link share, it scores 20
- replies, quotes and DM shares each score 5
- talk with your mutuals, replies between you score 20 instead of 5
- originals are the only posts that travel outside your follower base
- the 1st and the 32nd like each open a new route to strangers
- your 2nd post in the same feed is worth 62% of the first, so pick your best one
- videos still need 10+ seconds to qualify for the video lists
- earning a follow adds 4
- a pinned post with a bad link can flag the account for 7 days, worth a quick check
What you should NOT be doing:
- posts that get labeled low quality or misinfo now carry a warning, and nobody outside your followers can like or share them
- video alone won't carry you, an open counts 0.02 and the watch 0
- hide-worthy posts cost more, "not interested" sits at -52.27
- a post at 3am burns its 2 hour window before anyone sees it
- a tap that turns into a bounce is worth only 0.3
- replies and reposts don't get past your followers
- insults get your post hidden from anyone who doesn't follow you
- adult media in 3 of your last 5 posts puts a label on your account
- disguised content in videos gets checked from 64 likes, harder at 512
- self-reply chains under big accounts risk being zeroed
- one account label and non-followers stop seeing you entirely
- low-rated links don't belong in your pinned post
- recycled wording can get tagged as copypasta spam
- strangers tagged plus a low quality link is a pattern X flags
- engagement bait has no size exemption
- several posts in a row end up competing with each other
- hashtag stacks add nothing
- bookmarks are still worth 0
- 48 hours in, For You is finished with a post
Steak of the Day: the New York Strip 🥩
Cut from the short loin, the strip has a tighter grain than a ribeye, a proper beefy chew, and that fat cap running down the edge. Render that cap and it bastes the whole steak.
How I cook it:
Salt it the night before. Ripping hot pan or wood fire. Fat cap down first, then 3 to 4 minutes a side. Pull at 125°F, rest 10 minutes, butter and rosemary on top.
Ribeye gets the hype. The strip gets the job done.
Strip or ribeye? Pick one.

See those white lines running through the red? That's marbling. 🥩
It's fat inside the muscle, not around it. When the steak hits the heat, it melts and bastes the meat from the inside out.
That's where the juice comes from. That's where the flavor comes from. That's why a well-marbled ribeye almost melts on your tongue.
Lean steak needs help. Marbled steak brings its own butter.
Be honest: how hungry are you right now?
Coals should be going by now. Kickoff is 5:20.
Game day ribeye move: salt it the night before, two-zone fire, pull at 125°F, rest 10 minutes. Crust done before the anthem.

Chuck eye is the poor man's ribeye. It's cut right next to the ribeye, has the same marbling, and costs a fraction of the price. Salt it early, sear it hard, pull at 125°F. 🥩

Dallas gets it. The best steak value isn't the ribeye. It's the cuts butchers keep for themselves:
Bavette
Hanger
Flat iron
Picanha
Big beef flavor, lower price. Slice every one of them against the grain. 🥩
