Fuck off, Discord. Just get rid of your stupid update. Why does a chatting app need a mandatory update on every boot?
Why? How? How is that possible in 2026 desktop software? Your web page is just insanely fast, and without the client-side PWA upgrading like that, why can't your guys just implement the same things in the Electron desktop?

Definitely doing stuff extra fast.
We started installing the updates as they are downloaded, instead of waiting for all downloads to complete.
We also implemented multi-threading. So we used to decompress up to 4 installs simultaneously, each one using its own thread. Now, each decompress has multiple threads assisting as well, making installs extra fast. This was also done on the compression side, where we saved about another 5% in size.
To add a bit of context, it doesn't mean updates aren't great; they patch all the security problems. But I mean the approach to updating.
Just like web pages or web applications (like Discord on the web), for the application logic part, it can definitely do a hot swap.
For Chromium running the application itself, especially for Electron, it can just update like Chrome does: download in the background and ask the user to restart, taking around 1 or 2 seconds.
