2 years ago, I found the saddest cat in the shelter and took him home.
Last year, he raised $10k for that same shelter by starring in his own calendar.
This year, we're going to do even better.
Happy gotcha day, Gregory.

Rat Catcher Third Class Tom K. Fathoms was placed on the "Prisoner at Large" list of USS Maury in 1953 for repeatedly going AWOL. On three different occasions, RC3 Fathoms left the Maury and was caught raiding the galley of other ships. He also spent three weeks on unauthorized absence in Puerto Rico before being captured by the shore patrol and returned to his ship.

1: Ted Walsh - Horse Racing Commentator - “This is really a lovely horse. I once rode her mother.”
2: New Zealand Rugby Commentator - “Andrew Mehrtens loves it when Daryl Gibson comes inside of him.”
3: Pat Glenn, weightlifting commentator - “And this is Gregoriava from Bulgaria . I saw her snatch this morning and it was amazing!”
4: Harry Carpenter at the Oxford-Cambridge boat race 1977 - “Ah, isn't that nice. The wife of the Cambridge President is kissing the Cox of the Oxford crew.”
5: US PGA Commentator - “One of the reasons Arnie (Arnold Palmer) is playing so well is that, before each tee shot, his wife takes out his balls and kisses them. Oh my god !! What have I just said?”
6: Carenza Lewis about finding food in the Middle Ages on 'Time Team Live' said: “You'd eat beaver if you could get it.”
7: A female news anchor who, the day after it was supposed to have snowed and didn't, turned to the weatherman and asked. “So Bob, where's that eight inches you promised me last night?”
Not only did he have to leave the set, but half the crew did too, because they were laughing so hard!
8: Steve Ryder covering the US Masters: “Ballesteros felt much better today after a 69 yesterday.”
9: Clair Frisby talking about a jumbo hot dog on 'Look North' said: “There's nothing like a big hot sausage inside you on a cold night like this.”

Scotland has just done something quietly brilliant for its birds 🐦
New buildings across the country will now have to include "swift bricks", hollow bricks built straight into the walls that give birds a safe place to nest.
It sounds like a small thing but it isn't. Swift numbers in the UK have fallen by around 60% since the mid-1990s, and one of the biggest reasons is heartbreakingly simple: modern buildings have nowhere for them to go. Swifts have always nested in the nooks and gaps of our houses, and as those disappeared, so did they.
The birds themselves make it worse by being loyal to a fault. Swifts return to the exact same nest site year after year, having flown thousands of miles from Africa to get there.
When they arrive to find it sealed up, some will keep flying at the spot again and again, sometimes injuring themselves in the process.
The bricks cost about £30 each. They need no maintenance, they don't affect insulation, and once they're in the wall, you'd never know they were there. Sparrows, starlings and house martins use them too, all species in trouble for the same reason.
One RSPB conservationist put it starkly. In his part of Glasgow, not a single swift bred in 2025, the first time in his 30 years there. He called it "nothing short of heartbreaking."
Scotland is the first country in the UK to write this into law. Campaigners are now hoping the rest follows.

My latest is a review of "The Science of Discipline," by Nathan Maynard who wants us to view student misbehavior as an unmet need, a form of communication, and an opportunity to teach new skills. It's a humane idea but ultimately does kids a disservice.
