I have so much appreciation for the people who are relaying accounts of what happened in Wainwright out to the broader public. I have to say though, Canadian government comms culture is atrocious. There should be some kind of report from official sources. We basically got "There's been a horrible tragedy, don't speculate" from the government with very little else said a day later.
The whole country is still trying to figure out just how big of a disaster this is. Not because Canadians are morbidly hungering for infotainment, but because they are concerned about the lives lost and people hurt, and are trying to make sense of it.
The average person understands very well that the full summary of events and casualty count is not going to be available until much, much later. And that when it comes to identifying individuals injured or lost, it is no question that family notification comes first. But that does not preclude officials from providing their basic understanding of what happened, and ballpark figures when it comes to casualties. Is the number of people with life-threatening burns in the hundreds or the dozens? How about deaths? Missing?
It also seems that "something hit gas infrastructure" and "fire blew into a location on base where people were present" are two prevalent explanations coming out of the grapevine; if soldiers are talking about it in their networks, then officials are getting briefed on it, too. There doesn't need to be a scientific level of precision in the intel before going to the public; "At this time it is believed ...." does suffice, and is especially welcome if it dispels any erroneous information that's floating around.
Absent official lines of communication, all we have is what can be gleaned from Facebook comments of locals, chatter that makes its way to the public through CAF/first responder networks, eyewitness accounts from people in the area, etc. And this is how you get more rumourmongering than there otherwise would have been, which I believe is worse for a nation that is trying to appropriately mourn a tragedy. It shouldn't have to be that way.

For those wondering “where is the media on this”:
Lloydminster’s lone TV station was shuttered. Radio news on a weekend is slim pickings.
Nearest major centre is Edmonton at 2 hours away and they are also working on skeleton crews.
+ time needed to confirm details, etc.

Kelowna daycare operator says B.C.'s $10-a-day program benefits a privileged few castanet.net/news/Kelowna/63…
$10/day programs are FULL of high-income families or have a parent who does not work. The lack of income-testing in the system is baffling.
The system is severely broken and the premier having his own kids in a $10/day spot is a perfect example.
Just now, David Eby confirms that he has his kids in $10/day taxpayer-subsidized daycare.
Approx. only 10% of BC daycare spots offer $10/day daycare. Most families who want in can't get a spot.
As Premier, Eby earns $227k/year. Eby's wife is a doctor. Their household income is likely well over half a million dollars per year.
We don't resent British Columbians who are successful (we want more people to succeed).
But where there are wait lists, surely a wealthy family like Eby's shouldn't be taking advantage of $10/day daycare. Think about a working single mother? David Eby deserves the spot more than her?

Vaughn Palmer: David Eby about to call a totally unnecessary B.C. election

Hard to see how calling a snap election halfway through a mandate, on a literally Trumped up pretext, during a municipal election, 2 days after the official opposition leader resigns, when ppl within the premier's own party are calling for his resignation, will benefit the public interest in any way.

That's a Surrey dinner jacket, not a Canadian tux (which is denim).
.@Dave_Eby (wearing a Canadian tuxedo jacket) at anti-tariff rally in downtown Victoria opens his comments by saying Canadians would still support USA if another 9/11 occurred. “You bet your ass we would,” he says. But adds should “never, ever mistake that kindness for weakness.”

New: In a phone call with me after U.S.-Canada trade negotiations collapsed, President Trump suggested the US had added conditions late during talks.
“That sounds like me,” Trump responded, when asked about Canadian officials' assertion about US late-stage demands.
When I pressed, “So you don't deny it?”
The president replied, “No, no, I don't deny anything. So no, they have to pay a fair amount. And if they don't pay a fair amount, we won't make a deal. That's fine.“

The new U.S. tariffs of 50% on various items are now in effect. Presumably negotiations will continue, but if these last then job losses may be on the order of roughly 90k.
