Baby appears to interact with all the girls! Bambi will probably need time to get a bit more comfortable with Baby. Love to see this! ❤️

The ocean fertilizes forests, and forests return the favor. Salmon runs along rivers in Alaska, British Columbia, and the Pacific Northwest of the United States bring a quarter of the nitrogen found in trees up to hundreds of meters from the streamside. Bears, eagles, wolves, and dozens of other species haul salmon carcasses into the woods, which then decompose into the soil. This marine nitrogen can be traced by scientists as it has a heavier isotope signature than anything made on land. Trees beside salmon rivers can grow up to three times faster than ones without. Forests send nutrients back downstream as well. Forest soil is rich in iron, which is one of the key nutrients ocean ecosystems are starved of. Phytoplankton, the microscopic plants that underpin every marine food chain, can’t grow without it. Decaying leaves and wood leach humic acids full of iron that rain carries into streams, then rivers, and eventually into ocean waters that circulate this vital nutrient into the deep. Modern science is refining this macro-scale mutual support between ecosystems, but many cultures have already observed this phenomenon. Japanese fishing villages made a point to replant forested hillsides near their fishing grounds, and called them uotsuki-rin – fish-breeding forests. Conservation and restoration of these forest landscapes not only benefit the climate, the wildlife, and the communities that live among them, but also neighboring ocean ecosystems as well. Life in the biosphere is more interconnected than you can imagine. #nature #forests #conservation #restoration

After dinner, Maia and Baby shared a calmer greeting through the gate, touching trunks and exploring each other’s faces. Guille joined briefly. A positive step toward trust, while caregivers kept Bambi’s comfort and everyone’s pace in mind. Read more: globalelephants.org/maia-and…

🐘 At just two years old, Ganga was shipped from India to Europe. Nearly 50 years later, she has spent much of her life alone. Elephants thrive on family, friendship & lifelong social bonds. Ganga's story shows why we need a future with #NoElephantAlone. bit.ly/4yH9pQl

Following an invitation from Gabon’s National Parks Agency (@Parcs_Gabon), African Parks has partnered with the Government of Gabon, signing a Priority Support Plan (PSP) for Moukalaba-Doudou National Park and Wonga-Wongué Presidential Reserve. This initial phase of support marks our first formal partnership in Gabon. These two protected areas lie where Africa’s equatorial rainforests meet the Atlantic Ocean. They are home to forest elephant, western lowland gorilla, chimpanzee, mandrill, manatee, sea turtle and much more. This first phase will focus on the partners working together to understand both landscapes and what they need for the long term. Communities living around the protected areas will be central to this work, guided by consultation and strong social safeguards. It will also lay the foundations for a possible longer-term management partnership. “Gabon has an extraordinary natural heritage and a strong commitment to conserving it… We are honoured by the trust placed in African Parks and look forward to the work ahead.” Peter Fearnhead, CEO, African Parks Our thanks to Gabonese conservation leaders, government institutions and supporters, and to Edith McBean, the Rob Walton Foundation and other donors whose early support made this possible.
