Today, it was my honour to meet Her Excellency the Honourable Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Secretary General of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth of Nations is an international association we are deeply proud to be a part of as a country. Our history, use of the English language and very close ties with the United Kingdom make us a natural member of this organisation. We shall continue to support all its endeavors.

Today, the Commission met with the @SGCommonwealth, Her Excellency Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, at the Kampala Serena Hotel.
In her remarks, the @ChairpersonUhrc, Hon. Mariam Wangadya, noted that the Commission, as a National Human Rights Institution (NHRI), is part of the Commonwealth Network of NHRIs.
She noted that, despite resource constraints, the Commission remains committed to contributing to the work of the NHRI Network, including providing input on human rights issues considered through the Network and other Commonwealth platforms.
She expressed appreciation for the partnership with the @commonwealthsec in 2022, through which the Commission received support in building the capacity of its staff to understand the UN treaty body mechanisms.
Through the same partnership, the Human Rights Committee of Parliament also benefited from the training.
Hon. Wangadya further noted that the Commission looks forward to continued engagement and further opportunities for collaboration, particularly in strengthening its capacity to address emerging human rights issues and contributing meaningfully to the promotion and protection of human rights across the Commonwealth.

"Uganda needs a permanent national dialogue architecture where differences are discussed before they become conflicts, and where Ugandans can continuously find common ground on the future of their country.” @CKaheru , Member of the Commission

PPH (severe bleeding after childbirth) can be survived when spotted and treated early.
Mrs. Shamim Mayanja Byantalo (aka Zubeda) lived through it and she’s sharing her story so other mothers can too.
Let’s continue to raise awareness, support faster emergency care, and work together so no mother dies from PPH.

Earlier today, the @ChairpersonUhrc made a presentation on Government Perspectives on Human Rights, Gender and Leave No One Behind Priorities at the Human Rights, Gender and Leaving No One Behind Advisory Group (HRG-LNOB-AG) Mid-Year Strategy Retreat, held at the UNICEF-UNAIDS-WFP offices in Mbuya.
The retreat was officially opened by the UN Resident Coordinator, H.E. Leonard Zulu, who noted that the Advisory Group is critical to ensuring that the principles of leaving no one behind are integrated into the work of the UN and its partners. He urged members of the Advisory Group to ensure that these principles are reflected in planning, implementation and accountability frameworks.
The HRG-LNOB-AG serves as the UN Country Team’s primary inter-agency coordination platform for advancing human rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment, disability inclusion, youth engagement, and ensuring that no one is left behind.
In her presentation, the Chairperson noted that Uganda’s key challenge is implementation of the already existing laws. She underscored the need to track progress, identify gaps and devise mechanisms for improvement.
“We must increasingly measure human rights not by how many laws we have passed, policies we have written or institutions we have established, but the practical difference they make in everyday people’s lives. Leaving no one behind therefore cannot remain only a development slogan. It must become a practical test of governance. Who is being reached, who is still being left out, why, and what are we doing about it?” she remarked.
The meeting was attended by, among others, the Assistant Commissioner, Gender and Equity at the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Ms. Lydia Nabiryo; Senior Human Rights Officer-UHRC, Ms. Hope Bagota; and representatives from, UNAIDS, UNICEF, FIDA-Uganda and NUDIPU.
The retreat provided an opportunity for UN agencies, Government institutions and selected civil society organisations to reflect on emerging priorities, strengthen collaboration, and identify joint actions to advance human rights and inclusion in Uganda.
