The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa publicly released a fact sheet today (October 21, 2026) titled “Fact Sheet: Monitoring Canadian Activities in U.S. Politics.” It is available on the official embassy website and was posted by the embassy’s X account.
The document lists specific actions and quotes it presents as evidence that Canadian officials and the government have described plans to influence American politics (especially via retaliatory tariffs targeted at politically sensitive/Republican states, ad campaigns, meetings, and campaigning). Named individuals and entities include:
• Mélanie Joly (Industry Minister) — multiple quotes and a September 2026 trip involving meetings with Democratic officials.
• Doug Ford (Ontario Premier) — letter to Carney about additional tariffs on “politically significant states” and an earlier anti-tariff ad campaign.
• Anthony Housefather (Liberal MP) — campaigning in Florida for Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
• Bernadette Jordan — Canada’s Consul General in Boston (former Liberal MP and cabinet minister), cited for appearing with Democratic members of Congress at a trade roundtable.
• Government of Canada — for an anti-tariff billboard campaign in mostly Republican-leaning states.
