as someone who works in the software industry in britain, i can't believe there are contracts and estimates like this.
it seems getting these government contracts is incredibly lucrative in the uk, because the amounts are absolutely insane. £1.7bn to £4.4bn for hmrc's customer system? pre ai that's a crazy number. post ai it's still crazy.
for a fraction of the cost you could hire britain's top 50 engineers and pay them £300k a year. over 15 years that's £225m. it would cost less and be way better than what will come out of this.
put the rest into an ai lab and you'd have one of the best funded in europe. but no, it's an hmrc crm system lol.

Unelected officials are rubbish at reading the room. Cocooned in their ivory towers, they've never had to stand for election and they're completely unaccountable to electorates.
The EU got it completely wrong when they decided to make a monkey out of David Cameron and it resulted in a referendum, the outcome of which the out of touch failed to predict.
The Polish response to the attempted coup looks to be a similarly misjudged own goal by EU zealots.
Rather than shaping policy to reflect current political realities, the EU tries to double down on its doctrines. It's always a decade behind the times; slow, cumbersome, unable to be dynamic and in touch. It is the torpid author of its own demise.
It's crucified industry across Europe with its suicidal green agendas. It's destroyed businesses with excessive regulation, whilst simultaneously allowing sub standard imports from the Far East to flood the market.
Less than 2 decades ago Europe's economy was on par with the US, yet now it trails pathetically behind, unable to unleash itself from dogmatic, unyielding policy.
It finds itself swamped with illegal immigration; the very existence of Europe's cultural and historic identity is being extinguished before our eyes, but Shengen must be preserved at all costs and what a dear price we're all paying.

I don’t think he reckoned on the President turning around so fast and challenging the coup police who had seized the Constitutional Court/Tribunal. Tusk should be arrested as should those EU heads backing this naked power grab.

🚨 ISLAMIC BLASPHEMY LAW BY THE BACK DOOR 🚨
Kellie-Jay Keen (@ThePosieParker) has been charged with a criminal offence over posts criticising Islam, Muslim cultural practices and Islamism.
The Free Speech Union is proud to be defending her.
In a free society, no religion or cultural practice should be immune from criticism.
Since Labour came to power, the number of FSU cases involving people penalised for criticising Islam has doubled. It is now the single biggest category in our casework.
And now, with a state-approved definition of Islamophobia — rebranded as “anti-Muslim hostility” — things are only getting worse.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Communities Secretary Angela Rayner met Muslim community leaders in Downing Street. Burnham took a swipe at critics of Islam, saying “some of the language” opposition parties use “is unacceptable”, and told the leaders “we need to find ways with you to demonstrate that more and more”.
We now await Rayner’s appointment of an “Islamophobia tsar” who will help enforce the definition.
All five hand-picked members of the Working Group that drafted it have concerning links to Islamist organisations, as FSU Research and Policy Director @DavidRoseUK exposed in his report. We have little hope that the appointed tsar will be good news for free speech.
Meanwhile, the Government is refusing to say who submitted responses to the Working Group, so we cannot know which groups shaped the definition. Islamists may well have had a hand in its drafting.

An important article, but it is about housing policy in #England, not Britain. This is the customary British nationalist conflation of #England with Britain. theguardian.com/business/202…

Folks, this was entirely predictable -- and some of us did warn. The government, media and the broader establishment were agitated into a typical bout of #dosomethingism about the Telegraph's future when it looked as though the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund was set to take over. We can't have a major UK newspaper sold to a 'foreign power', they said. Then, the same people cheered when it was sold to Axel Springer, a foreign buyer. And now you're suddenly worried that that foreign buyer might have his own political agenda that doesn't sit with the Telegraph's own, traditionally British conservative political stance?
Alex Springer's political leanings are well known: right leaning liberal, pro-EU, pro-Israel, Atlanticist, liberal-interventionist, anti-populist. I am not arguing that this position is wrong. I disagree with some aspects, of course, but I also see it as a perfectly reasonable position to hold. Whatever one thinks, though, we should very much not be surprised that this is now where the Telegraph is being pushed. Because even better known than the ideology itself is that Axel Springer treats it as an absolute non-negotiable for every journalist that works for any of its publications. Notoriously so.
And now those who had no problem with this organisation taking over the Telegraph seem surprised that all the journalists that aren't right of centre liberal, pro-EU, etc, etc are being booted out in cost-cutting measures.
Well done, folks. When the Telegraph turns liberal, pro-EU and starts serving up the John Major lie of 'Britain being best off improving the EU by reforming it from within,' like the limp, uneaten half of a cheese toastie rewarmed on a prison cell radiator, you can look in the mirror to find the person to blame. But at least this wouldn't be done by a foreign power that might have its own reasons for tilting British public opinion that way, or removing the one broadsheet newspaper that might have opposed it. Right. RIGHT?!
We need to talk about The Telegraph
One of the UK's oldest and most respected right wing papers. A broadsheet. A thought leader.
Today - a political bloodbath with some of the most talented leading commentators of our day brutally axed before the paper veers left.
What is happening is another leftist attack on Europe. Another pillar crumbled. Another institution taken over and destroyed
Wake up. The long slow Communist takeover of Europe is currently on steroids

Denmark spent decades building nearly 5,000 wind turbines
Together, they produced 21.6 TWh in the last 12 months
One nuclear plant in Sweden made 23.3 TWh
Oh, and nuclear runs 24/7 — wind doesn’t

Of course Rachel from Accounts thinks we should rejoin the European Union. She consistently does the opposite of what is required to build a prosperous economy.
This is a good summary…

The British political establishment have a deranged obsession with mass immigration. Mass immigration into a densely populated country with a relatively fixed capital infrastructure is economically stupid & leads to a per capita decapitalisation of the economy.

The silence of the graveyard in the Daily Telegraph about this disquieting incident, which sheds a terrible light on the state of European governance.
I hear the new Springer group owners are toying with the idea of having as the newspaper's new motto: 'The End Justifies the Means'.
Oxford St. gets a lot of flak (mainly from Londoners) about being an unpleasant place. But it's always overlooked how superb much of its architecture is. Selfridges is sublime but it has many other gems, many of them Art Deco. Hopefully pedestrianisation gives them more exposure.

I feel like every time I read the news online, there’s an overwhelming amount of awful news stories confirming that we are governed my malevolent and incompetent narcissists. God knows what it’s doing to my blood pressure.
