It's funny because the planets are close to their stars...so they're crispy (or at least would be if they weren't gas giants)...and I'm crispy..........yea

paper day! 🥳 we tried @astrobites lesson plans with a bunch of students to see how it affected them (hint: it was good!) students felt better about reading research literature afterwards, plus lots of other positive effects as described in our paper: arxiv.org/abs/2309.05822

From @EricaSawczynec: As astronomers, many of our lives have been touched by the islands of Hawaiʻi & now it’s our kuleana (responsibility) to show up for the Hawaiʻi community when they need us most. astrobites.org/2023/08/15/ma…

Hi Twitter folks, I've made a comic/illustrations for the first time about the recent detection of gravitational wave background by @NANOGrav and other PTAs.

From Guest: When harassers coauthor papers, the community suffers, but nobody is more affected than the Early Career Researchers within those groups. This is how we, the ECRs within the California Planet Search, have tackled the recent authorship debacle. astrobites.org/2023/06/25/ex…

I always wanted to be an Elizabeth Bennet, but it turns out I’m more of a Charlotte Lucas (27 years old, no money, no prospects, a burden, frightened)

Doing a dual major in math in undergrad has been like…0% useful for me in astronomy. I’ve never once used abstract algebra, complex analysis, or real analysis outside of core physics courses, but I sure could’ve used more statistics classes and numerical analysis 🥲

If anybody has any book recommendations… Don’t have a specific topic in mind, just want to fill holes in general. This tweet has been brought to you by the natural cubic spline, though.

well. @UMich has officially docked all pay but $100 for april from its grad workers, putting many of us in a position of dangerous financial precarity. friends/allies, please consider donating to @geo3550 strike fund at givebutter.com/GEOStrikeFund. we need all the help we can get ✊

This is absolutely ridiculous -- a company wants to launch satellites so people can buy artificial shooting stars. The last thing we need is more space junk & threats to the night sky. Thank you @stellarmorticia for sharing -- please sign! chng.it/5NZD6BpV via @Change

Sorry I’m late, I had a random thought while sitting in the parking lot that lead me down a 20-minute Wikipedia rabbit hole.

I sure wish my dopamine-deficient goblin brain could realize that just because I only have three tasks, doesn’t mean they’re only going to take an hour. Or really would just get any sense of how long things take.

My brain when trying to guess how long a research task will take: “That’ll be like one day.” Actual time: either one hour or one week (no in-between) When trying to guess how long it’ll take to queue a bite: “Ten minutes tops.” Actual: An hour, minimum (darn u WordPress errors)

I get home from observing at 5:30 AM, and my cat (whomst I found while observing!) is laying on the kitchen rug angry-staring at me in the dark like a TV parent waiting up to tell their kid off for breaking curfew.
