Across India, Congress and other opposition parties are protesting against the RSS-BJP’s attempts to capture democratic institutions. When students protesting in Delhi face police action, Congress leaders rightly condemn the suppression of democratic rights.
But in Congress-ruled Kerala, SFI students protesting against the implementation of the Sangh Parivar agenda and demanding basic university facilities are facing suspension and exclusion from examinations.
For years, the SFI and the previous LDF government strongly resisted the Governor’s attempts to influence university administration and appointments, even fighting legal battles to prevent the Sangh Parivarisation of higher education.
Now, under the Congress government, Sangh Parivar-linked appointments have become a major controversy, while the government is accused of accommodating the Governor’s agenda.
At Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, 16 SFI students were suspended following a protest in August.
What is even more disturbing is the propaganda surrounding the protest. Students say their street play concerned defective theatre equipment, not a symbolic funeral of the Vice-Chancellor. Yet the university authorities portrayed it as a mock funeral and accused students of assault. The students reject these allegations and accuse the Higher Education Minister of reinforcing this false narrative, which has circulated through mainstream media, damaging public perceptions of their protest.
More than two months later, the students remain suspended. The university even challenged a High Court order provisionally allowing them to write examinations and succeeded on procedural grounds.
And the Congress government, instead of addressing the controversy, has distanced itself by claiming it has no role in the university’s disciplinary decisions.
This is not merely about 16 students or their examinations. It concerns the treatment of organised resistance to the Sangh Parivar agenda within Kerala’s universities.
Allegations of misconduct can be investigated fairly. But disputed accusations and disciplinary powers must not become instruments for suppressing democratic protest.
If Congress defends the right to protest against the RSS-BJP in Delhi, those same democratic principles must apply in Kerala, where Congress itself holds power.
