Wrecked sleep last night. Cafe mistakenly gave me fully caffeinated coffee versus decaf. Cancelled my morning dunk training as acute sleep disruption can increase injury risk by 70-130%.

No one was there taking pictures for the cover of Time Magazine when my army engineering unit was digging mass graves outside Fallujah for all the men and boys the marines killed after refusing to let any males leave the city, then treating everyone who remained as a combatant.
Among the most unforgettable images of the Iraq War is the photo of 1st Sgt. Brad Kasal being helped from Fallujah’s “Hell House” by LCpl Chris Marquez and LCpl Dane Shaffer on November 13, 2004, during the Second Battle of Fallujah. Blood soaked and still clutching his 9mm Beretta, Kasal became a lasting emblem of sacrifice and the bond between Marines. Inside the house, he had been shot by insurgents 7 times and hit with shrapnel from a grenade blast after he threw himself over a wounded Marine. Gravely wounded and bleeding heavily, he still refused to be pulled out until the rest of his men were accounted for. Those actions earned 1st Sgt. Brad Kasal the Navy Cross. The picture, and what he did that day, stand as a clear expression of the Marine Corps ethos: courage under fire, loyalty to one another, and the refusal to leave a fellow warrior behind.

RIP Roman Buzyle (1992-2026). 🇺🇦🕯️ Talented Ukrainian cyclist from Kharkiv, he rode the European Champs and Tour de l'Avenir in 2013. He lost his life at just 33 years of age as a soldier in the war.

Coverage of the death of Ratko Mladic, like the previous coverage of him while he was alive, mostly misses a key point: he was not himself a senior architect of the war and genocide in Bosnia that began in 1992. He was initially a relative nobody; a mere colonel at the start of the war in Croatia in 1991. He was handpicked for his role and appointed to it by the actual architects, who were in Belgrade, in particular Branko Kostic, acting President of the Presidency of Yugoslavia; Blagoje Adzic, acting Federal Secretary of People's Defence; Borisav Jovic, Serbia's member of the Presidency of Yugoslavia; and Slobodan Milosevic, President of Serbia. None of these people was convicted of war crimes, and apart from Milosevic, none was indicted. The obsessive focus on the Bosnian Serb leaders Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic has always served to obscure the fact that the war originated with the regime in Belgrade, Serbia.

Grip strength predicts cardiovascular mortality more accurately than blood pressure in studies following 140,000 people. Most people never train it deliberately.

At first sight, it would look like Almgren is leading a large pack for a close finish in the 10K, then you realise he has lapped all but 3 runners in a Championship final!!?!! and finishes nearly 20s ahead off Defending Champ, 45s ahead of World Champ. Domination is a small word!
Terrific Run from Andreas Almgren 27:23.44 to break the Championship Record from 1978!!!

I unironically think old Japanese danchi (social housing) are better than modern apartments, bc their single staircase hallway-less design gives you windows on both sides.

i really broadly dislike the new yorker these days but this is an all time wrong take
The idea that we have a special duty to prevent the death of languages is compelling to anyone who loves languages. But is it true? How sad should we be when a language dies? “Consider the case—call it callous or simply tough-minded—for saying, ‘Not at all,’ ” Nikhil Krishnan argues. While some languages have been systematically wiped out by authoritarian governments forcing assimilation, others have been lost, chosen, or abandoned under more ambiguous conditions. Efforts to preserve languages require resources that some believe would be better directed toward other public priorities.. Multilingualism can pose challenges to comprehension. “Even where the death of a language would be acknowledged as a tragedy, what we should do—what costs we should be willing to bear—in trying to stop it must remain an open question,” Krishnan offers. Read his response to a recent book about linguistic preservation: newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

Just a pic. (via FB) of trenches nr. Monfalcone - 🇮🇹 - at the end of WW1. Note the sandbags (we're near the coast), barren landscape (now covered in scrub woodland) & - in particular - extensive use of woven hurdles to protect from flying rock fragments & snipers' prying eyes.

Ten days of water. That is what is left in northern Italy. Salt from the Adriatic pushing upstream into soil that fed generations. Emergency meetings next week. Crops already turning. We bear witness to a land dying on a timeline measured in days, not decades. phys.org/news/2026-07-drough…
