JetBrains IDEs are now powered by libghostty! This brings huge feature and performance improvements to JB terminals! Based on their own annual reports, that's over 12.5 million active users across all platforms about to get a libghostty-powered terminal. blog.jetbrains.com/platform/… I'll repeat myself: libghostty is and was always the primary goal of the Ghostty project (I said this in the first public talk I ever gave about Ghostty). The importance and impact of a free, liberally licensed, high quality terminal emulator library that runs anywhere and everywhere dwarfs any single terminal emulator application on its own. I've estimated Ghostty's (GUI, not libghostty) own users at around a couple million. Overnight, 6x that are using a libghostty-powered terminal. From one integration. Happy to see this, happy to hear JetBrains had a positive experience, and looking forward to continuing to improve and ship a stable libghostty tag soon!

If you hang out with happy, optimistic, and ambitious people, it'll rub off too. That's why pruning your social media algorithms is so key. Don't psyop yourself into a depressive hole.

AI makes your work harder, not easier. I think of it as work density—the percent of time spent expending brain cells. The denser the work, the more exhausting it is. If you have 10 agents running at once, you have 10x the context swaps, each of which requires recovery time. The more density, the higher the recovery time. When you don't take time to recover, you burn out. Working with multiple agents is worse than normal multitasking because you're juggling more tasks. There's nothing new about this. I can't think of a single "time-saving" workplace technology that saved anybody any time. Instead, it forces us to work harder. It increases density. The problem is compounded by moronic management that fires people because of the tech. In practice, firing 50% of your staff means that the remaining 50% have to do twice the work in the same time. It's exhausting. The utopian notion that AI will create leisure time is complete BS. It will just force us to cram more work into the time we have. We need to just stop frantically pushing, pushing, pushing for more and more output and relax. It takes a conscious effort to counter that effect, so make the effort. You will not be "more productive" once you burn out.

Linus Torvalds says, rules prohibiting AI usage are “UTTERLY STUPID” and “idiotic”. For the Linux kernel, Torvalds says, “we’re not going to make stupid rules that say ‘you can’t use tools for X’”.

you might be the first person talking about the data over the architecture! 🥲 we consider ourselves a data research lab! the vast vast vast majority of research was on making data that is truly general (ala a cognitive core) and 100% of our data is synthetic (but not the type of crap that is just spit out from an LLM obviously)

The key point is to recognize that the more you care for others the greater will be your own sense of peace. It's quite clear that where there is less kindness in the world, there are more problems. When we talk about love, kindness and compassion, it's not a religious matter. It's part of the fundamental reality of relations among social creatures.

We created gyms because modern day work no longer required physical activity. Without exercise, our muscles atrophy. I predict we’ll need gyms for our brains too, once AI starts doing our knowledge work.

Software developers make easy scapegoats because people don't know or understand what we do. The move, in some circles, to eliminate developers entirely stems directly from that ignorance. They don't understand what we do, so they imagine it's easy (and easily replaced by AI). Wrong on both counts. It's not about the coding. We, of course, make matters worse by not going out of our way to be more visible and accessible.

This morning it finally came home to me. I will probably never write another program in C again. Which is a big deal. I've been writing C since 1983. 43 years is a long time and a lot of skill investment. It's not like I didn't see this coming. I've been writing about the decline of C for years, predicting that it would be displaced by newer systems languages with better safety guarantees and more coherent designs. It wasn't better language design alone that did it, though. It's how good LLMs now are at generating code from specs and prompts. This means I can speak a program into existence in Rust or Go without any more effort than would be required to conjure it up in C. What makes this particularly dramatic is that I never learned to hand-code in Rust. And now - I don't need to. What a long, strange trip it's been.

I was one of those nerds. You've missed the way I'm adapting to AI, which is by moving *up* the stack rather than down. My job is design and specification now, not coding. I was a hand-coder for nearly 50 years. I find I miss it surprisingly little. I guess I was a designer after all.
What these kinds of takes underestimate is that before AI, a lot of people got into software engineering because they liked the cognitive challenge of coding. Back in our day, many of us who became SWEs started coding at a very young age, in our teens. We weren't even thinking about making a huge salary. We just wanted to do something challenging. Coding was nothing to brag about. They called us nerds and weirdos. With AI, everyone can churn out code. The nerds will either go deeper down the stack (e.g., into hardware) or find some other field where they can manifest their weirdness.
