Hi. I started a newsletter called *Animal animal*.
It’s partly for the small kid in your life: animal limericks, facts, drawings--
--and partly for you: books, art, online treasures.

As promised, a new batch of yaksha. This time, I turned my eye to pan-Asian representations of the makara and the gajasinha.
I hope you like them and if you do, that you’ll consider buying one. In the age of AI, how nice to own some human-made art, no?

The Navajo hogan is a masterpiece of efficiency & vernacular architecture: tons of thermal mass, an aerodynamic profile, well-ventilated yet comfortable year
round. The entire structure is built by hand from materials harvested nearby, & it’s fully biodegradable. Perfection

3. Stone gajasinha sculpture in the ruins of the kingdom of Yāpahuva (1276–1284); a brass gajasinha made in Senkadagala (Kandy) in the 1800s, copied from a silver lamp at a temple in the Dumbara Valley (via V&A).

Nice new site: ruism.org. A bilingual edition of the Four Books, Chinese with James Legge’s English translation, and Zhu Xi’s commentary in Chinese toggles open under each verse. Plus the Five Classics, terms, bios, etc. Also has a Spanish and Catalan interface!

AI attempts to hobble or outright destroy the liberatory possibility of information technologies—the ability to use voice, image, video, and text as authentic witness and testimony, in a globally accessible human archive transcending distance and time, to easily contradict power.

The gajasinha is a mainstay of Hindu/Buddhist art. It serves an apotropaic role, and/or appears as a guardian animal. Popular in Lanka as a threshold guardian, I was surprised to learn it appears much less frequently in East Asia.

Tokyo developed new anti-crow posters to put up around trash collection sites. They feature geometric shapes幾何的 and eyes which apparently put crows on their guard
However, as the effect only lasts for a few days, the cities prepared several different types
The crow population in Tokyo has gone down from 36,000 in 2001 to 7500 today

The extraordinary painterly photographs of Léonard Misonne (1870 - 1943). A pioneer of 'pictorialism' Misonne was originally a mining engineer who was forced to change career to photography due to asthma. He invented many new printing techniques to create his dreamlike images.
Liking these very much:
