I'm listening to the Sold a Story podcast season two, which is on math education in the US, and it is enough to give me an aneurysm, seriously. The season opens with a bunch of little kids' voices doing very basic algebra, and you learn later that these are poor Black four-year-olds, and all of them are getting the problems correct. Oh, and they're super engaged. Apparently, there was a group that figured out you can have kids go very fast in math if you just did direct instruction. But somehow, culturally, this was deemed "too hard" and too much of a "pressure cooker" for little kids. It's pretty funny because it's not like there was any high-stakes testing or anything. It literally was just teaching the kids instead of "letting them discover it themselves." I did a master's in education, and there was a lot of content in the program about equity, and how socioeconomic class, parental habits and attitudes, and level of education really shape a kid's academic achievement. It's just infuriating to hear that when they discovered a teaching method that works in spite of these disadvantages, it was thrown out as being, I guess, somehow not "fun" enough. It's difficult to believe that they didn't actually have ulterior motives.

Excellent caveats for schools leading Continuous Improvement efforts - I've led a few myself - Diagnosing the problem, the most important step, is often done so poorly that the chosen initiative is doomed before it starts. All of us in education are so prone to bias...

What do you do as a teacher in an era when students don't read outside of class & often struggle to read even in-class?? You can do as the @ncte suggests & "de-center" the text, abandoning reading books altogether & replacing them with short form videos & other dross. Or you can do as Jaime Johnson does & "re-center" the text, reading a worthy book together as a class. When you do that you can curate the act of reading itself so it becomes a meaningful, rich, empathetic habit for students. teachlikeachampion.org/blog/…

This is the way. Knowledge rich curriculum and explicit direct instruction
I wondered who would be the first to ring the alarms about Direct Instruction & reading comprehension. Unsurprisingly, it's @natwexler, who reminds us of the need to follow the Hirsch school and not just the Engelmann school. "Both Engelmann and Hirsch had keen insights about what has been missing from American education, with Engelmann focusing on how to teach and Hirsch on what to teach. Neither model is complete, but if applied judiciously in tandem, the two approaches could be hugely powerful. It’s terrific that Season 2 of Sold a Story is spreading the word about one of these models. But I worry that by leaving out the other, it is also omitting a crucial part of the story that too many educators have been sold for too long, to the serious detriment of way too many students."

There's been a lot of talk in the last few weeks in edu circles about whether the trad education movement has failed, what it needs to do next, etc. This article is just the latest in a succession of examples that shows how us edu-trads have not been nearly as successful as we hoped in altering elite consensus on education. We have obviously seen with all the Labour party policies that we completely failed to convince Labour. But actually, it's not like we've really convinced the Conservatives either. This is Dan Hannan, major figure in Brexit, major figure in Conservative politics, presumably has some idea of who Michael Gove is - and here he is in the Telegraph confidently asserting that we no longer need to know things because we can look things up. (The ironies in this piece abound, by the way. He argues for lessons in spotting bad bogus arguments at the same time as building an article around the argument that memory doesn't matter any more. He argues that "identifying improbable claims" is a generic skill that can be taught in the abstract, at the same time as claiming that handwriting and geography are obsolete. He says that you can always just look up what you need, whilst signally failing to look up any of the evidence on the role of long-term memory...I could go on.) I wrote a few weeks ago that there was some evidence journalists at the Financial Times were waking up to all the evidence on cognitive science, its implications for schools, the international test evidence. But the elite understanding of this is a very thin layer, absolutely skin deep. The mass of second-hand dealers in ideas are still distilling their frenzy from Romantic pedagogy. Depressing. I honestly don't know what else we can do. We wrote the books. We had the debates. We built the schools. We aced the tests. And then it turned out nobody cared. Right now it is definitely a bleak time to be a trad. It feels like we are on Athelney Marshes, beset by vandals without and dissension within. BUT we have to keep the faith. Reality is an undefeated champion. Despair is a sin! What we do works! It may well be that for now, the New World with all its power & might etc., is going to have to step in to save our bacon for a bit. Maybe the momentum is shifting to @ehanford and Sold a Story, @rastokke and Chalk & Talk, @jettybe3 , etc. We have got to dig in. As Declan Rice said, it's not done!

“This tracks with recent speculation that ed tech is fueling chronic absenteeism, as students conclude it doesn’t much matter whether they stare at screens at school or at home.” Absenteeism is the canary in the coal mine ?

As an academic I feel like that I'm living in that scene in The Big Short where they see all the empty houses and know it's a bubble, but for me it's hearing about all the innovation and growth in higher education, then teaching a class where only 8/250 students show up weekly

I Rread Grant Wiggins blog religiously. Wisdom, balance and integrity. Great suggestions for educators anytime
Three Lessons for Teachers from Grant Wiggins. Sadly, Grant passed away 10 years ago. However, his brilliant ideas are preserved in his books and articles. Here is a timely article to share at the start of a new school year. jaymctighe.com/wp-content/up…

San Diego Padres fans don’t know how good they’ve got it. The Padres are in the hunt year after year. They have two of the most entertaining young players, committed ownership and a madman GM that will never settle.

As someone who grew up watching the Padres put out lineups like this for YEARS, I couldn’t be more thankful for Mr AJ Preller. Don’t let the obnoxiously loud minority of post covid Padre fans get to you, the real fans love you for making us relevant.
