🧵 THREAD
1/ Your daughter posts something online.
She is 19. In college. Trying to figure out what she believes. She shares a political opinion that an algorithm flags as problematic.
You do not see it happen. No one notifies you. No one tells her.
But 72 hours later, her bank account is frozen. Her student loans are suspended. Her digital ID shows a compliance violation.
And there is nothing you can do to protect her.

Chloe woke up at 6:45am and immediately felt proud of herself.
She had, after all, not eaten a single animal product in four years. The planet was healing. She could feel it.
6:52am - Applied her morning SPF. The SPF contains beeswax. Chloe does not know this. Moving on.
7:10am - Breakfast: a smoothie containing avocado. The avocado was grown in Michoacán, Mexico, on land where a pine forest was until 2019. It required approximately 320 litres of water to produce. It was flown to the UK. Chloe sprinkled hemp seeds on top. The hemp seeds came from China. Chloe felt connected to the earth.
8:00am - Got dressed. Polyester leggings, derived from crude oil. A bamboo top that was processed using carbon disulphide in a Taiwanese chemical plant. Trainers with a recycled plastic upper that sheds microplastics into waterways with every wash. Chloe's outfit today had a higher carbon footprint than a ribeye steak. Chloe does not know this either.
9:30am - Posted on Instagram about choosing compassion. The phone was manufactured in a Shenzhen factory using cobalt from the DRC, where mining operations have displaced local communities and killed an unknowable number of small mammals, reptiles, and insects. The algorithm served Chloe an ad for oat milk. Chloe liked it.
12:00pm - Lunch: tofu stir-fry. The soy was grown in Brazil. Brazil produces more soy than almost any country on earth. The primary reason is soybean oil: one of the most widely used industrial and culinary oils on the planet. The soymeal left over after oil extraction is fed to livestock as a byproduct. Chloe is aware of the livestock connection and finds it outrageous. She has not looked into why the soy was grown in the first place. The answer is the oil. The oil is in her salad dressing.
1:30pm - Drove to the garden centre. The car runs on petrol. Chloe has a Just Stop Oil sticker on the bumper. This is not being commented on further.
3:00pm - Bought a monstera. The monstera was grown in a Dutch greenhouse using natural gas heating. Chloe put it next to the pothos that is slowly poisoning the neighbourhood cats.
6:00pm - Dinner: pasta with cashew cream sauce. The cashews were processed in Vietnam, often by workers in conditions that would prompt significant commentary if they were in an abattoir.
8:00pm - Watched a documentary about factory farming. Wept. Posted about it. Caption: "We have to do better."
Chloe is, by every measure she has chosen to measure by, doing brilliantly.
By some of the others, the picture is more complicated.
Chloe has not chosen to measure by those.

"When men burn women alive, we hang them." 🇬🇧🔥
That was Britain's answer. Here's why they said it.
In India, when a husband died, his widow was expected to climb onto the funeral pyre.
Into the flames. While her family watched.
One man watched them drag his sister-in-law onto the fire.
She was seventeen.
She screamed. They chanted louder. They held him back.
His name was Ram Mohan Roy.
He spent years researching the ancient Hindu scriptures. He proved the practice had no basis in the holy texts.
Then he went to the British and said: help me end this.
The army said don't. Too dangerous. Could cause a rebellion.
Eight thousand women had burned alive in thirteen years. Just in Bengal.
In 1828, Lord Bentinck became Governor-General. He called the practice "revolting to the feelings of human nature."
December 4th, 1829. He signed the ban.
The law was sent to translator William Carey. It arrived on a Sunday morning.
He threw off his coat and said:
"No church for me today. If I delay an hour, many a widow's life may be sacrificed."
He worked through the day. By evening it was done.
But it wasn't over.
800 orthodox priests signed a petition to overturn the ban. They sent it to London.
Roy sailed to England to make sure the law survived.
The Privy Council upheld the ban.
Years later, priests marched to General Charles Napier and demanded he respect their traditions.
He listened.
Then he replied:
"Very well. This burning of widows is your custom. Prepare the funeral pyre.
But my nation has also a custom.
When men burn women alive, we hang them. And confiscate all their property.
My carpenters shall build a gallows beside your pyre.
You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."
No widow burned that day.
An Indian reformer asked Britain for help.
Britain said yes.
Together they saved thousands.
There are thousands of stories like this. Stories they never taught you.

Are you Venezuelan?
- Have you ever lived in Venezuela and struggled to survive there? Have you lived with $15 a week?
- Have you ever stood in line for 12 hours just to buy a loaf of bread?
- Have you ever waited 24 hours for a single package of rice?
- Have you slept on a hospital floor and watched your loved ones do the same because there were no beds and medicines?
- Has a member of the Guardia Nacional, SEBIN, CICPC, or PNB ever held a gun to your head and demanded $1000, threatening jail because you had a meme on your phone?
- Has the military ever stopped you on the road between cities and extorted money from you simply for traveling?
- Have you visited a friend in prison for the “crime” of possessing a government-critical meme on his phone?
- Has a police officer ever inserted their fingers into your private parts while “searching for drugs,” and laughing and mocking you simultaneously demanding a ransom and threatening you like “ay papa este va para el comando” and then to the SEBIN offices if you didn’t pay?
- Have you eaten nothing but lentils or beans for ten days straight because that was literally the only food available in the country?
- Have you watched family members, classmates, or coworkers lose 20 kilos because there was simply no food to be found?
If you answered “no” to these questions, please keep your opinions to yourself. People in this sub lived those things and far worst. We don’t care what you think from the comfort of New Jersey or Berlin when it comes to our oil, Trump, or our future.

Imagine a scenario in which large numbers of white people start saying that they “feel black,” and that because of this feeling, and their enjoyment of stereotypically “black behavior,” they are now not just black themselves, but the most marginalized and vulnerable type of black person.
Imagine them insisting that they should be the main focus of all activism meant to help PoC. Imagine them having operations to darken their skin and mimic stereotypically black features. Imagine them walking around in blackface, and saying it’s the exact same thing as actually being black.
Imagine them being honored as black citizens by the White House, being summoned to talk to the President about issues facing the black community, being supported by celebrities, and having laws passed to make white people who identify as black a protected class.
Imagine these people demanding membership in black organizations, insisting that they receive a share of the reparations that CA is about to pay, and demanding they be given awards created specifically to honor black achievement. Then imagine them getting their way.
Now imagine mobs of them showing up to black events that don’t include them, carrying threatening signs and air horns to drown out any speakers with noise. Imagine them coming up with slurs for any black person who doesn’t accept that white people are black if they say they are.
Imagine them calling for the rape, torture, and mass murder of any black person who disagrees with them. Imagine them getting black people doxxed, harassed, assaulted, fired from their jobs, and investigated by the police for saying that you have to be born black to be black.
Now imagine the government supporting their demands.
That’s exactly the position that women are in right now, with a few extras, like being locked in cells with dangerous men, the sexual predation of lesbians via coercion, and the increased risk of sexual assault in what used to be female-only spaces. Our oppressors are now claiming not only the right to oppress us in whole new ways, but the right to erase our identities as women and rewrite the meaning of womanhood in ways that suit - and include - them.
If you wouldn’t support this kind of behavior towards black people, you have no business supporting this kind of behavior towards women.
