***ANNOUNCEMENT*** Coming soon on Blu-ray in the US from @mondomacabrousa: #JovanaLukina / #Beasts Double Feature (1979/1977)! In the remote and dangerous mountains of Montenegro a young married couple - Jovana and her husband Luka - work hard to make ends meet, carving out limestone blocks for grand buildings. Jovana’s strange beauty both scares and attracts the procession of bizarre and dangerous characters that pass through their isolated location. Sexual violence. jealousy and religious oppression are a constant threat to their fragile existence. Reacting against the harshness of her daily life, Jovana feels a growing sense of power within her which culminates in a stunning scene of defiance and liberation. Ingmar Bergman described the film as the greatest portrait of a woman ever seen in cinema. The film has little dialog and is filled with vistas of astonishing beauty, like an old folk tale, full of magic, myth and ritual. Controversial during his lifetime, Živko Nikolić died in poverty at the young age of 59. In the years that followed his death he began to be rediscovered and is now recognized as one of the world’s great film makers. Comparisons have been made with visionary film makers such as Jodorowsky and Parajanov. First Blu-ray and first US release in any format. BEASTS It’s a dark and rain-swept night. On a floating island adrift in the ocean, an old sea captain awaits his imminent death. A gaggle of black-garbed crones hover in the background. There’s a priest, a sailor, an older woman with fiery lusts, a young man who sings mocking songs, and a gang of unsavory characters whose bad behavior is fueled by drink and boredom. An ancient law says that people are not responsible for their actions during a violent storm and just such a storm has now enveloped the island. That night, a beautiful and mysterious woman arrives by boat. She creates havoc. The men lust after her and the women chase her through the rain drenched streets. She brings excitement and awakes suppressed passions, hatred, love and fear, turning upside-down the otherwise boring and monotonous island routine, exposing dark secrets. The natives sing traditional songs, the atmosphere is earthy and mythical, and it all leads to a violent metaphorical climax. This was the first feature film from Montenegrin director Zivko Nikolic and is a powerful and unique exploration of the beasts that lurk in the human soul. This is the film’s first Blu-ray release and first US release. ***ANNOUNCEMENT*** Coming soon on Blu-ray in the US from @mondomacabrousa: #MagicCurse (1975)! Philippines based playboy, Man-Ying (future Shaw Brothers star Jason Pai Piao), learns that his uncle, flying back from Borneo with a large cache of gems, has crashed in the wild jungle and is now missing believed dead. Man-Ying flies off to Borneo, hires a crew of local guides and sets off to find him. His first encounter is an attack from a gang of leprous zombies. His terrified guides flee, leaving Man-Ying to defend himself. He kills one of the zombies, who then morphs back into human form and thanks him for freeing him from the Black Magic curse cast on him by a wizard named Abdulla, leader of a powerful and dangerous snake cult. Man-Ying discovers that Abdulla was responsible for stealing his uncle’s gems. His attempt to retrieve them fails. Pursued by the cultists, Man-Ying is rescued by Filona the goddess of the snake cult. She nurses him back to health and before he leaves for Manila makes him promise to come back for her. To ensure his faithfulness she bites his lip, casting a spell on him, ensuring that any woman he has sex with will die horribly. Back in Manila, Man-Ying soon settles back into his old life of partying in cheesy nightclubs and having sex with random women - all of whom perish horribly due to Filona’s curse. After the second death the police get suspicious, and Man-Ying says they must return to the jungle where Filona will free him from the curse. But Abdulla is waiting... ***RELEASE DETAILS*** Coming soon on #4K and Blu-ray in the US from @MondoMacabroUSA: #BlackMagicWithBuddha (1983)! *PLEASE NOTE - the reverse cover image and the Blu cover are still in the design stage but will be revealed soon* Looking for a way to get rich quick, ne’er-do-well Ben Chin (played by Shaw Bros regular Chen Kuan-tai) travels to West Papua in order to steal the brain of a mummy and make it do his magic bidding, as one does. Though warned by a holy man to destroy the brain after using it only once, Ben cannot help himself and continues to use the malefic cerebellum to bump off his enemies and rise the corporate ladder. But the situation moves quickly out of his control, leading to a hallucinatory final confrontation between the grisly Brain Demon and a powerful deity known as the Four-Faced Buddha. BLACK MAGIC WITH BUDDHA is a particularly wild example of the ultra-gory ‘black magic’ themed horror films that were made in Hong Kong in the early 1980s, full of insane plotting, goopy, gross-out effects and deranged psychedelic imagery. Directed by another Shaw Bros veteran, Lo Lieh, for his own independent production company, BLACK MAGIC WITH BUDDHA has remained underseen for decades though it has become legendary among devotees of offbeat Asian horror. Mondo Macabro is very excited to present this amazing relic of Hong Kong trash-horror in a brand new 4K restoration, which was overseen by producer and Asian film expert Frédéric Ambroisine. This disc marks the first ever US release of the film in any format.
