I'm in my 40s. I'm a lawyer. My wife is a lawyer. We both work full time. We cannot afford the house my parents purchased on a single electrician's income in their 30s. We cannot afford the house my immigrant grandparents purchased on a single MTA bus driver's salary in their 30s. They had SIX CHILDREN. For 30 years, politicians in Washington & their oligarch allies convinced regular people that this was just about avocado toast and fancy coffee. In reality, this is end-stage capitalism. Everyone is stuck in place. It's impossible to buy a home. It's too costly to move. We work too much to have passion projects. We don't have enough savings to start our own businesses. We can't afford to go without healthcare to do it. Thanks for writing this article @troy_closson. Would be very happy to discuss further. nytimes.com/2026/10/25/nyreg…

Yikes. Anthropic just pulled the exact accounting trick that companies did in 2000 bubble for IPO. They hid all their expenses via convertible notes redeemable at IPO. $108 billion worth. Dotcom firms often paid suppliers, ad agencies, lawyers and even landlords with stock or equity to save cash. AOL swapped shares for services and ads (e.g., Homestore, DrKoop). Telecom suppliers like Lucent, Cisco and Nortel used vendor financing, sometimes with equity or warrants, to drive equipment sales.
So we’re all in agreement Anthropic was paying all of its expenses in convertible notes?

Every 10 minutes a man kills a woman or girl.
All we hear is “male privilege!” but I honestly don’t see it. I do see a lot of “female privilege” though… I’ve been experiencing it nonstop while traveling! Can someone give an example of “male privilege” in society today? Something deeper than “shorter restroom lines.”

I think the fact that Marissa Mayer would voluntarily disclose this to a reporter is a pretty good demonstration of how deeply the culture of Silicon Valley has diverged from the rest of humanity

Spoiler: Loved You Can See Everything. But I'd like to see discussion, as I've been having privately with friends, about all the bros (Fielder, Oppenheim, A24) balking at Elizabeth Holmes potentially profiting from her story, meanwhile Fielder, another subject of the doc, does. – at Toronto, Ontario

The actual Semites are buried under the rubble in Gaza, with their remains being mixed into the foundations of Jared Kushner's new apartment complexes. So don't ever give me that "antisemite" shit when I'm being critical of Zionism or Israel.

LA is basically run by a "good old chuds" network. Incumbent officials who have run the city into the ground playing petty-tyrant machine politics are furious that Nithya might actually follow laws and professionalize operation of the city. politico.com/news/2026/10/20…

The most important risk factor for Anthropic is the rule of law actually being applied. "Any determination that we are liable under such theories, or any judicial or regulatory expansion of tort, product liability, or consumer protection law, or criminal liability, as applied to AI models, could result in significant liability and require us to change how we design and offer our models, platform, and applications."

And this is why we should reject the tendency to frame anti-imperialist solidarity through the lens of self-interest. This argument, that foreign military intervention/violence should be opposed simply because it diverts public funds from domestic healthcare or social programs, is rooted in social-chauvinism.
Genocide is wrong because it is wrong, not because it is expensive for Americans. The longer we allow these disgusting talking points which center US comfort rather than the lives of those enduring atrocities, the longer we will find support for these atrocities

BREAKING: Zero-day vulnerability discovered in COBOL. Banks immediately activated their emergency response plan. Unfortunately, the only engineer who understands the code retired in 1997. They found him in Florida, fishing. He said, “I warned you about that in 1983.” Then hung up. 😂 The entire global banking system is now waiting for a callback from a guy named Earl.

“COBOL is still deeply load-bearing in banking, especially at the core: account ledgers, overnight batch processing, and card/ATM authorization. The widely cited estimates are that roughly 43% of banking systems and 95% of ATM swipes run on COBOL code, and that around 80% of in-person banking transactions pass through it.”
