The explicit reason for a salary cap is fairly clear.
Private equity is buying majority/minority shares of pro sports teams, and MLB owners can do that more if they have a salary-cap league that would continue to increase franchise evaluations at rates that exceed the current ones.
Owners can cash-out, PE can invest in something with more lucrative ROIs than other investment ventures, and we the sports fan gain absolutely nothing.

It’s unacceptable that in the year 2026 refs will spend 10 mins looking at a WMU v Mich Hail Mary attempt for 1 second (extremely uncommon) but a top 10 matchup that hosted Gameday gets a crew that sprints off after a normal play.
