New paper! Moths ARE metamaterials. Our new paper explores the amazing properties of the scale covered wings of moths. We found that they absorb sound energy from echolocating bats, granting them acoustic camouflage and helping them avoid detection. pnas.org/content/early/2020/…

Moths matter, which is why we're celebrating them this #WorldWildlifeDay 🌍🌿🦋 Moths are one of the most diverse groups of insects on earth, ranging from spectacular Hawk-moths to small, intricately patterned Footman moths. 📷: Kate Reece #WorldWildlifeDay2025

❗️🐟🇪🇸 - A live Humpback Anglerfish, more commonly known as the Black Seadevil, has been caught on camera for only the second time ever. The video was taken near the Spanish island of Tenerife, adding a new chapter to our understanding of these enigmatic deep-sea dwellers. The Humpback Anglerfish is famous for its grotesque appearance, featuring a large head, wide mouth, and a bioluminescent lure used to attract prey in the pitch-black depths of the ocean. These creatures typically live in the mesopelagic zone, around 1,000 to 4,000 feet below the surface, making sightings extremely rare. The first known recording of a living specimen was back in 2014 off the coast of Hawaii, captured by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.

It's fun when your Fitbit captures the exact moment you had to run after your dog after he caught sight of a squirrel

Out today in @RSocPublishing! We show that butterflies and moths accumulate so much static electricity that pollen is attracted onto them across air gaps, meaning they don't even need to make contact with the flower to pollinate it! 🦋🌻 royalsocietypublishing.org/d… 🧵👇

Have you ever felt like you have a "sixth sense"? That you can somehow feel that danger is coming? Turns out caterpillars really can! We've just discovered that they can sense the static electricity of predators and react defensively. Out now in @PNASNews doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2322674…
