A small mercy in all this is seeing how widely Helen Haines is cherished. We need the best of us in politics. And we should be grateful when they make it there.

For me to 'allow' a resident in an aged care facility in Australia to have paracetamol, I suspect over 50 clicks are required by 3 different healthcare practitioners. A medication that is legal for kids to buy and take.
Fun fact: there’s no study which shows computer order entry is safer than verbal orders. In many cases it can be much better for patient care. Doctors aren’t always near a computer while on call. They do surgery. They go home. They drive places. Imagine a nurse needs an order from the doctor. Doctor is nowhere near a computer, or scrubbed into surgery. A verbal order, with read back, is much better for the patient than waiting for the doctor to find a computer, especially for something urgent. This is why many hospitals still allow verbal orders. And, again, there’s no evidence to show this is less safe than forcing the doctor to spend time finding a computer, logging in, getting to a patient chart, doing the 50+ clicks to enter an order, and signing it. But of course those in the administrative class think that wanting your doctor to do actual patient care instead of data entry work makes you a moron.

As usual ridiculous cherrypicking of the Brendan Nugent account. Some right accounts treating him as simply a leftie based on older tweets ignoring obvious recent shift in behaviour. Some left accounts treating ***very obviously*** sarcastic tweets re Hanson etc as sincere.

Its insane that modern healthcare requires that a physician stop what they’re doing, find a slow, clunky computer, and then spend a few minutes and about 50 clicks to put in an order so an over the counter medication can be administered by another licensed healthcare professional

Just in case anyone is wondering: I live in Paris; if I didn’t have X dot com I would have no idea there are riots in France.

Smug fatalism is the one position I can’t stand. When I was a kid, Spain, Portugal, and Greece were ruled by military dictators. Walls with barbed wire cut Berlin and Jerusalem in half. Being gay was illegal in Spain, and interracial marriage was forbidden in Virginia. You can make your own list of the changes you've seen, but the point is that humans have agency, nothing is static, and hope never dies. Onward!

One thing that really stood out to me during the 2020 BLM riots was how much of the coverage ignored the many people, predominantly minorities, who had their lives and livelihoods destroyed. Their stories never fully got told.

Not sure if the Roadster demo is real. But I appreciate that Tesla has made every effort to make the footage look as fake as possible.

6 months on it's still shit. Today it seems the fuckwits at PRODA have removed email login codes and defaulted to an authenticator app, but you have to sign in to verify an app🤷‍♂️
I'm prob in the 95th centile for computer literacy. And the government's HPOS/PRODA portal seems hostile to anyone trying to set up a new medical clinic. Anyone involved in OK'ing the system should be ashamed of the abomination they have birthed.

It's funny seeing some academic doctors complain that today's medical students and residents are too soft. Some of these docs see like 10 patients a week and don't come near a patient without an NP buffering zone.

I hope the images of Zohran Mamdani having people who claim to be pro-Palestine screaming at him in public and calling him a traitor for attending an October 7th vigil will finally wake people up to what I have been warning about for years.

Imagine protesting Mamdani over fucking Palestine.
Pro-Palestinian protesters gather outside City Hall to call out Mayor Zohran Mamdani for what they see as his betrayal of the movement. "Mayor Mamdani, you can't hide we charge you with genocide" was a chant that just rang out.

Growing up in a Hindu household, if I ever stepped on a book, even by mistake, I was told to bow to it. Knowledge is highly revered in our tradition.
The most educated religious group in the United States is Hindus. By a long shot. 47% have a graduate degree. Jews are next at 39%. Then a big gap. Those least likely to have a grad degree? Jehovah's Witnesses.

i hope the people building stuff like this are someday kept up at night by what they’re taking away from the entire world in exchange for money. there is no legitimate reason for AI to be able to fool someone into thinking they’re talking to a real person on video chat.
Introducing Griffin, the first model to pass the video Turing test. 48% of people who talked to it live thought it was a real human. Previous systems have had a pass rate <3%. It is #1 on NVIDIA's benchmark for full-duplex AI video. It’s the first Human Interaction Model (HIM).

The 48% figure and "video Turing test" claim are from Tavus's own study of 54 one-minute calls, not independently verified or using a standard protocol. This is called "victim blaming". Nora Loreto has frequently criticised victim blaming, including saying: "Victim blaming is shameful". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victim_bl… x.com/NoLore/status/…

Writing this on the ocassion of an Indian pilot saving Israeli lives from a suspected terrorist attack is a revealing choice.
The Indian right wing’s love affair with Israel and Netanyahu is ultimately rooted in one thing: its visceral hatred of Muslims. Their admiration for Modi and Netanyahu comes from the same impulse- leaders who will subjugate Muslims, and “show them their place” in the world.
