writers hating their readers this much will kill fandoms actually
people who don't contribute anything to the fandom (don't create artwork, fics, or support writers and artists) do not deserve to have an opinion on how the work is shared, and at this point don't even deserve the access to any of it. this will kill all fandoms.

Stories like this make my heart drop. I love single emoji comments as much as long ones; can’t even imagine replying like this. That was a lovely sentiment to share but it wasn’t good enough? No matter how much other writers deny it this is a grossly entitled capitalistic mindset
idk one time i commented "i wish i could give this endless kudos" on a fanfic and the author very condescendingly replied "or you could write an actual comment instead". we don't know what it is that some of you specifically want, sometimes commenting is already too much lmao

"we don't want the fics on drives because we want community engagement" THE DRIVES ARE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT!! someone in your community loved your fic enough to SAVE & SHARE it! Villianizing your own readers is driving the community AWAY from you, do you not get it??

it's the way they think they can "punish" readers by holding their fics hostage under threat of deletion. YOU wanted to write in the first place! everything else is just a bonus. and i say this AS A FIC WRITER. SHARING YOUR WRITING HAS ALWAYS BEEN A SELFLESS ACT. YOU WANTED THIS.
To be completely transparent I am joining the war on "entitled readers" on the side of entitled readers and I am a fanfic writer and have been for longer than some of you have been ALIVE.

day 3 of no AO3: we have run out of food (discourse). now people are saying it's bad to discuss fanfiction you like with friends unless you have your entire conversation in the fic's comment sections
I remember reading a fic recently and a commentor left a comment that basically went "OMG we talk about your fic in our discord all the time" and I was like....."you could just leave comments for the author???" The fic author is also part of the fandom experience 🙃

fic writers are not gods or celebrities. they're normal fans just like everyone else. they're not above criticism for their behaviour.

so you want attention and kudos but you don't think fanfic is for readers to read?? how does that even work?? yes, fanfic is there to be read. that's the only reason it exists on ao3. idk what the hell you think readers of free fanfic need to be doing to 'deserve' this fanfic.

Update from OTW’s tumblr. Notice how there is ZERO mention re the “consent issue” of sharing downloaded fics— just advice as to the more secure methods *without condemning* private drives at all while ALSO encouraging folks to continue sharing fanworks while the archive is down.

It's literally impossible to post a fic and get 0 interaction on it. There's simply too many users on AO3 for even the worst fics to pass unremarked. They're just refusing to say the quiet part out loud: they want interaction within 24 hours.
i'm a fic writer, not a reader, so i can say with absolute certainty that this concept of "writing for a void" is extremely blown out of proportion when almost every piece of fanfiction i've put out has some sort of engagement on it, even in a dead tag.

the thing we're all 'owed' as fanfic writers is not comments or kudos or engagement btw. it's the freedom to write and post whatever the hell we want without being harassed or sued or arrested. that is our privilege. and it is a privilege.

fanfic writers are disproportionately revered. no one treats published authors as gods for writing books. you're treated like selfless martyrs sacrificing so much to hold the fabric of fandom together...when no one forced you. if you're not enjoying it, you can stop any time.

writers are treating readers like kudos and comment machines tbh
where is this whole "readers treat writers like content machines" coming from??? you don't need to give someone saying "omg pls update soon" so much credence. they aren't holding a gun to your head lmao

The way ‘consent’ has become a moral buzzword that folks drop whenever they need to strengthen an argument is so insidious and needs to be studied. It INSTANTLY adds ethical weight and pressure even if it is NOT applicable and it scares people into panicked apologetic compliance.
i've said it before but there has to be a thinkpiece somewhere on how the medical / criminal paradigm of consent has wormed its way into every discussion. wtf do you mean you don't "consent" to someone downloading your fanfic on a site that has a built in download button

Sharing a G-Drive: gray area, just use it to read, nothing more! Sharing it to another website under your name: NOT OKAY, DON'T DO THIS, this is equal to posting fanart without permission for likes, even if you credit the artist.
I'm not going to get into the discourse as to whether it's okay to post an author's work on gdocs without permission, but this? NOT okay. Do NOT repost an author's work onto another platform, at that point it just becomes theft!

AS A FIC AUTHOR I AM STAUNCHLY AGAINST USING GOOGLE DOCS TO SHARE FICS. They should be printed out on long narrow scrolls of old parchment, loaded into small tubes, and sent via carrier pigeon

one thing i really don't like about the constant fic writer discourse is the emergence of an "us vs them" mindset when it comes to fic writers and fic readers because it is so antithetical to the spirit of fandom

ESTO ES VÁLIDO, está bien que compartan el archivo pdf/epub de ao3 con los créditos correspondientes y el link directo a la obra pero NO resuban a otras plataformas trabajos que no les pertenecen
i don't care if you pass around pdfs of my fics or put them in gdrives but please do not reupload on fanfic. net or wattpad or any other alternative reading sites thank you :)

Let’s wake it up because I’m tired of mfs acting like entitled readers are the only thing poisoning fandom/fanfic spaces. When I write, it is through an intense desire to make something exist. Posting means I’m giving people the *option* to read and respond. That’s all.
ALSO people have the right to lurk. They have the right to read, enjoy something/not enjoy something and do absolutely nothing about that. You working touching them doesn't entitle you to their vulnerability in expressing that. Some of y'all are getting extremely egotistical.
