Thrilled to have my final (and probably favorite) PhD project out in JAE! 🐛🐛🐛
🌿 + 👀 = predator-proof! A new study using 800+ hand-painted caterpillars shows that spicebush swallowtail "eyespots" deter birds only when hidden in leaf rolls 🐛 Watch below to see how leaf rolls are made...

Paper for recolorize, my R package for color segmentation, is out! Featuring a couple of new examples. Special shoutout to @SVBelleghem, who lit a candle when we submitted it and also was just the most helpful coauthor you could hope for. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

recolorize: improved color segmentation of digital images (for people with other things to do)
We picked common (challenging) use cases—texture/reflection, lighting variation, batch processing, combining w/ spectra, and more.

Newly discovered frogs from New Guinea have taken camouflage to a whole new level - resembling bird poop!

Why is variation sometimes continuous, yet other times packaged into discrete units of diversity, such as morphs, ecotypes, and species?

I'm beyond thrilled to say that I've officially accepted a Postdoc Research position at the @FieldMuseum! I'll be working with @brunoasm & Rick Ree to study the evolution of beetle coloration using #AI 🪲🌈

And it is finally out!!! 🥳A humongous effort led by @JoelElkin416 summarising what we know and what we don't know about the loci underlying variation in vertebrate pigmentation🎨 @gephebase @evolvwing @Biol4Ever

Replying to @emiliapsantos
We are hoping to have the most up to date dataset to work on the revisions of our meta-analysis of the loci/mutations contributing to vertebrate #pigmentation variation. Led by @JoelElkin416 with @evolvwing and
@Biol4Ever using @gephebase data. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

At the U of M Research Museum Center measuring caterpillar colors w/ @HylaCrowe! Maybe P. troilus can be an honorary herp?? 🐛🐍👩🔬
Hangin out with some of my favorite critters of all time... spicebush swallowtail caterpillars (Papilio troilus)! I just can't resist those comically large eyespots.

Can you BELIEVE this is a REAL LIFE ANIMAL?!
These incredible caterpillars (Enispa sp.) use silk to cover themselves in lichen and create the perfect camouflage. When they're not moving, you wouldn't even know you were looking at an animal.

Writing this was a wonderful experience, thanks to the team for coming together on it. I hope it proves useful.
🌈Interested in how animals balance complex (and often conflicting) demands on coloration?? 🌈 Check out my recently published review in @BehavEcol: doi.org/10.1093/beheco/arac0… !
One of the things getting me through quarantine, a heat wave, and California wildfires: watching these adorable chunks (Papilio rutulus larvae) grow and change! I found them ~2 weeks ago and they're getting so big already...
