This is ridiculous. Thermostasis is normal. 12 years has been the one-party presidential max for more than 5 generations with the single exception of Depression+WWII. The uniparty examples of other countries do not in the slightest apply to the US 2 party system.

I would rather be fed feet-first into a VERY slow woodchopper than to live a life like the one suggested here. A life without my women friends would be pure uncut dystopian nightmare fuel.
Replying to @ProudAtlantean
Why are you irl friends with women you aren’t in a relationship with

The Panamanian embassy being in Piraeus so they can more easily coordinate front corporations for Greek shipping magnates is so funny. Not hiding it in the slightest, I love it.

Something that gets lost in housing discourse is the difference between IRL vs online NIMBYs IRL NIMBYS tend to be old people who hate poors, traffic, & change. Online NIMBYs are usually leftists with weird beefs. They think YIMBYs are annoying and supply/demand isn't real.

taking an urban economics class in my planning program really made me drift away from leftism because the commies in my program were struggling with it yet they wanted to implement ideas that they could never budget for and hated when my professors kept reminding them about money
knowing economics alienates you from left wing friend groups it’s crazy. i explain how a thing works in america and it’s always “no but it shouldn’t be that way” like ok sure there’s drawbacks i agree. and then you ask what the solution is and they just say “not do that”

There was a semi-well known interview of the famed Argentine writer JL Borges where he explains this. Borges: I have done most of my reading in English. I find English a far finer language than Spanish. William F Buckley: Why? Borges: Well, many reasons. Firstly, English is both a Germanic and a Latin language. Those two registers—for any idea you take, you have two words. Those words will not mean exactly the same. For example if I say “regal” that is not exactly the same thing as saying “kingly.” Or if I say “fraternal” that is not the same as saying “brotherly.” Or “dark” and “obscure.” Those words are different. It would make all the difference—speaking for example—the Holy Spirit, it would make all the difference in the world in a poem if I wrote about the Holy Spirit or I wrote the Holy Ghost, since “ghost” is a fine, dark Saxon word, but “spirit” is a light Latin word. Then there is another reason. The reason is that I think that, of all languages, English is the most physical of all languages. WFB: The most what? Borges: Physical. You can, for example, say “He loomed over.” You can’t very well say that in Spanish. WFB: “Asomó?”* Borges: Well, no, no, they’re not exactly the same. And then you have, in English, you can do almost anything with verbs and prepositions. For example, to “laugh off,” to “dream away.” Those things can’t be said in Spanish. To “live down” something, to “live up to” something—you can’t say those things in Spanish. They can’t be said. Or really in any Romance language.
Whenever I see this on the TL I’m reminded how great a language English is. Look at this syntax. “In lands to him unknown” is iambic, as are the first lines. And Latin puts adjectives after the noun — terra incognita — which is why “lands… unknown” feels so formal.

I am convinced that this is very likely to be the biggest underestimation of any Dem statewide candidate this cycle.
The contrast between Peggy Flanagan and El-Sayed is interesting. They're both up ~3.5 points in our polling average. But since Minnesota is bluer, Flanagan is actually underperforming the state's partisan benchmark by more.

If you’re a Mamdani booster, there’s nothing to be mad about here; if anything this helps cement his broad appeal as normal/relatable, vs “crazy” leftists. If you’re a leftist antizionist, though, this is frustrating and disappointing. Not because they’re being unfair to Zohran or whatever—but because there’s still so many on the left who clearly have no theory of power or change beyond “petition those who have power.” The archetype of The Radical that they hold in their minds—and which they seek to emulate—is the permanent outsider, the externalized (shaming, haranguing) conscience of those who can actually make decisions. Never the decision makers! Never the ones with power, but solely the beggar to power. Except the begging is disguised through performative hostility as if it were something else, a demand with real force behind it. But of course, there is no force, no leverage. It’s all kabuki—but the audience for the performance is, more than anyone, the performers themselves. If you think Zohran is a genocidaire, I think that’s nonsense, but honestly that doesn’t bother me *nearly* as much as that *this* kind of empty gesture is your response to something as profoundly horrifying as genocide. Can’t you build something better, bigger, stronger? At the minimum, you could primary him from the left in 2029! But if not, please come up with *something* other than these kinds of powerless acts of prostration, of begging, masquerading as demands. You can’t demand anything without power—if not electoral power, then find something else. But without power, it’s not a demand, but a plea. A whimper.
Lander is now speaking at the vigil while Mamdani looks on. The anti-Zionist protesters are chanting “Traitor”

Gentrification debates just use racism as a crutch to avoid questioning the very rentierism that upholds racial hierarchies. It’s catnip for the socially conscious but economically illiterate crowd.
Most gentrification debates fall apart when you arrive at the complicated idea of people staying where they belong.

I don’t think people grasp just how little college admins care about rape. When my friends prompted me to pursue a no-contact order against my abuser, I spoke with the dean, and after I described being trapped in my room and assaulted, he just sorta chuckled.

It’s very underrated how uniquely Democratic the Midwest became in the 2000s as a result of the China shock. A lot of the places Obama won that year in that area were ancestrally Republican and hadn’t regularly voted Dem until very recently before that if ever.

Here's a suggestion: DONT BE BAD PARENTS. I had good parents, but I know lots of people who had shitty ones. People don't cut off their own parents without some really nasty stuff having happened. Don't be a d-bag and people won't walk away from you.
Well, this is sad and terrible: “Many experts believe that estrangements between adult children and their parents are becoming an epidemic in the U.S.” “Psychologists say young adults’ definition of harmful parental behavior is changing.” They “consider ordinary conflict to be much worse than it once was” and “have a much broader definition than their elders of psychological harm.” “Many now view repeated criticism, strong disagreements and other painful relationship conflicts as abusive.” “In their minds, they see themselves as more enlightened and therefore more justified to cut off for more reasons.”

You can't on the one had shout climate catastrophe as the core rationale for organizing around public power, and on the other reject one of the most reliable low-carbon sources of energy we have available (in a very wintery and not particularly sunny state!) Be more serious.
🚨 NEW YORK SOCIALISTS OPPOSE NEW NUCLEAR 🚨 In a depressing new state filing, all of the DSA Socialists in Office slate serving in the state legislature have joined other state Dems in opposing the governor's landmark Nuclear Reliability Backbone initiative. Specifically, they "oppose the use of any taxpayer or ratepayer subsidies to support the construction of new nuclear power plants in New York." Why? Because, they argue, nuclear is too expensive, too slow, and what-about-the-waste. The same old New Left shit. When will Zohran's abundance left approach be applied to energy? When will DSA abandon its green NGO advisors on energy issues? documents.dps.ny.gov/public/…

Socialist electeds have made real progress for working people, but some still opposing nuclear energy remains a baffling blind spot. You can't build a reliable, 100% clean, public grid without firm baseload power. Nuclear is an objective good, not even a necessary evil.

This is terrifying and appalling, but unfortunately, not surprising.
NEW: I spoke with 13 former Jewish-school students about the “brainwashing,” “indoctrination” and inculcation of anti-Arab racism they say they endured at the schools. They claimed the schools play a crucial role in Canadians joining the Israeli military readthemaple.com/youre-liter…

an interesting thing about her view here is that she seems to feel the problems of bad schools are actually really easy to fix and the only reason they persist is that no one with "status" (a NYT reporter or, i guess, literally any functional white person) has not demanded that they be fixed. but that is not the way the world works, generally.
“A NYT reporter in a high-poverty school f-ing changes the school … I can go to that school and say there is a problem and it gets fixed immediately” - Nikole Hannah-Jones
