Personally, I know what I'm always looking for when I read game reviews is for them to all say the same thing and be in complete agreement

Just got out of Street Fighter. They were really cooking with this one. Movies have never been more back.

GTA 6 didn't take 13 years to make
So Gears E-Day took 7 years to develop and had up to 316 employees and cost $500m+ allegedly. Meanwhile GTA VI is 13 years in development and had up to 4757 employees and cost $1-1.5b allegedly. That's some fuzzy maths right there.

"We showed it to my colleagues in sales and marketing, and everybody hated it," Layden says. "But I thought, This is Masaya Matsuura. He made PaRappa the Rapper. We respect him." From my conversation with Shawn Layden for my Vib Ribbon Oral History. designroom.site/vib-ribbon-o…

This would have been the top-level reveal at any gaming showcase it appeared in this year. We haven't independently corroborated if it's real, but it looks very convincing and incredible either way kotaku.com/mass-effect-5-uni…

A source tells Kotaku that Gears of War: E-Day cost over $500 million to make. Sales estimates have been weak despite earning the highest Metacritic score since the original trilogy. If it was never going to recoup its expenses, maybe it could achieve more as an Xbox console exclusive kotaku.com/the-case-for-excl…

EA mass lay-offs: - 2023: 800 jobs - 2024: 670 jobs - 2025: 400+ jobs - 2026: 400 jobs Going private did not break the pattern, not that anyone thought it would (Note: EA's headcount rose annually through early 2026; despite each mass layoff) gamefile.news/p/ea-closes-bi…

In 2016, we published potentially the largest single feature to ever appear in a printed issue of Game Informer magazine with a full oral history of the legendary studio, BioWare. We've made that feature available online and free for the first time following reports of the studio's impending closure. gameinformer.com/feature/202…

My guess is that advertisers actually have some strange irrational attachment to web pages and that otherwise The Ringer would be content to just be a middle brow hype house for millennial content creators
isn't it obvious (even if they won't cop to it) that The Ringer, which is now explicitly an arm of Spotify, is moving toward being just a podcast/vodcast platform with no written articles? via @DefectorMedia

Would love to see the spreadsheet math that is telling folks there is a hidden productivity gain in here unless it's purely aimed at more quiet layoffs
scoop: Xbox is mandating a 4 day return to office. It will start in February, and it's more than the 3 days Microsoft currently asks employees to spend in the office. Details 👇 theverge.com/report/1015733/…

EA calls itself "the number one publisher in Western HD gaming" in its email announcing new cuts and layoffs. The company previously promised $700 million in annual cost cutting, including $170 million in "organizational efficiencies," when it was shopping around its leveraged buyout debt. kotaku.com/here-are-the-game…

Matthew Belloni reports that some Netflix managers were asked to identify subordinates for termination, only to discover that they themselves were being fired. Even more remarkable is the sequence involving Lin, Bajaria and Doug Belgrad: -Lin was instructed to dismiss Belgrad.

Me during my employee evaluation
Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters: "In the U.S. our engagement is solid and it will allow us to continue to grow. But we know that we can do better. That better is our upside. It’s our goal to go from very good to great on the performance of that slate."

As far as side quests go this is a pretty embarrassing one even if the dollar figure on it isn't super high. -Spin up a big blockbuster studio with top talent and then bail -Acquire successful indie studios and then bail -Pay for a bunch of free games that don't move the needle
Netflix has spent the last few years telling investors that it was excited about its foray into video games. Today's earnings update has zero reference to that business.
