This may be true for some students; however, research has shown that switching to the English program does not improve their outcomes. It points to the importance of providing them with evidence-based support in the FI setting (Sutton, Kay-Raining Bird, Genesee, & Chen, 2019).
I’m interested in your take on the stance that a child struggling in FI would learn more in English because they would at least understand the language of instruction. They would still struggle but would pick up something (vs nothing/v little) from the conversation around them.

No child is ineligible for FRENCH IMMERSION. Researchers have been unable to identify specific attributes or characteristics that consistently predict success in 2nd language learning (Lightbown & Spada, 2013), indicating that every student has an opportunity to be successful.

A switch from FRENCH IMMERSION to the English-only program rarely ‘fixes’ students’ academic problems because their difficulties are often ‘pervasive’ - unrelated to the language of instruction. So, why not provide them with the tools they need to succeed? cpf.ca/en/files/Diversity-in…
