This teacher-turned-cognitive scientist shared a disturbing reality that left the room stunned. “Our kids are LESS cognitively capable than we were at their age.” Every previous generation outperformed its parents since we began recording in the late 1800s. So, what happened? Screens. Dr. Jared Horvath explained: “Gen Z is the first generation in modern history to underperform us on basically every cognitive measure we have, from basic attention to memory, to literacy, to numeracy, to executive functioning, to EVEN GENERAL IQ, even though they go to more school than we did.” “So why? … The answer appears to be the tools we are using within schools to drive that learning (screens).” “If you look at the data, once countries adopt digital technology widely in schools, performance goes down significantly, to the point where kids who use computers about five hours per day in school for learning purposes will score over two-thirds of a standard deviation LESS than kids who rarely or never touch tech at school. And that’s across 80 countries.” But screens aren’t just decimating learning and making new generations less intelligent than the ones before them.

Marc Andreessen revealed how Harvard Business School was built on a broken 1941 theory, and how it's now collapsing... Andreessen co-founded Netscape in 1994 and a16z in 2009. He has sat on Meta's board since 2008. He has spent 30 years backing founders and watching managerial CEOs lose to them. The pattern traces back to one book: James Burnham's The Machiavellians (1941). Burnham argued every great company had been founder-run. Henry Ford ran Ford. Bob Noyce ran Intel. Today, Elon Musk runs Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink. Then, he said, something broke. Between the 1880s and the 1920s, a new philosophy replaced the founder. It was called managerialism. The professional manager would now hold a portable skill, usable across any business. The consequences were: - Harvard Business School - Stanford Business School - Management as a universal skill - The 1970s conglomerate "That assumes the managers are going to do a good job," Andreessen says. For 30 years, they haven't. Managers can run something static, he says. Soup is soup. A bank is a bank. A car is a car. But when the industry changes, the manager freezes. Look at SpaceX. "Imagine being a professionally trained manager, trained at a top management school, working for a rocket launch company, competing with SpaceX." Then Elon's rockets started landing on their butt. "Your management skills ... what good are they at that point?" Andreessen's conclusion: "You're much more likely to build something important in the 21st century if you start with the founder and train them on management."

Our own military pilots keep seeing things in the sky they can't explain. Not airplanes. Notdrones. Glowing balls of light that stop on a dime and take off faster than anything we've built. You and I grew up calling them UFOs. Here's the part that will get you: the government finally admitsthey're real. They just won't tell us what they are. I've been trying to crack this story for a good while now. What a former intelligence officer toldCongress, under oath...

100% Cancer Remission Achieved in ALL Patients in Groundbreaking Study Dr. Andrea Cercek, one of the lead researchers, said: “It’s absolutely incredible ... We’ve certainly never seen this before.” All 12 patients experienced complete rectal cancer remission after receiving dostarlimab, a monoclonal antibody. This particular monoclonal antibody achieved 100% cancer remission without chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, or the toxic side effects that come with such therapies. The authors wrote: “All 12 patients (100%; 95% confidence interval) had a clinical complete response, with no evidence of tumor on magnetic resonance imaging ... and no cases of progression or recurrence had been reported during follow-up (range, 6 to 25 months after treatment). No adverse events of grade 3 or higher have been reported.” How does this monoclonal antibody actually work? Dr. Cercek explained that it essentially unlocks the body’s ability to heal itself.

Since many of you have asked me privately for introductory material on analytic philosophy after the Kripke post, I wanted to propose to you Michael Dummett's ''Origins of Analytical Philosophy'', a nice short read which requires very little technical knowledge, outside of the basics of logic, as the book focus on the history of the ideas found in analytical philosophy.

Saul Kripke, it's fair to say, is one of the most important analytic philosopher of the past century, and although many books were written as ''discussions and criticism'' of his ideas, it's a bit harder to find a good one which is closer to an overview of his ideas on metaphysics and philosophy of language. In ''Kripke: Names, Necessity and Identity'' by Christopher Hughes (Oxford) you will find just that, and more! The book is fairly short (259 pages), and requires basic knowledge in epistemology, metaphysics, linguistics and logic. Very well written. If you have struggled to understand Kripke, this is a great way in. Check it out!

This paper answers why confident idiots run the world. Cornell University published a psychological paper that explains every terrible boss, every loud influencer, and every broken corporate hierarchy. It’s called “Unskilled and Unaware of It.” they tested participants across logic, grammar, and humor to measure the gap between actual performance and self-perception. And the results are wild. participants scoring in the bottom 12th percentile consistently believed they were operating in the 62nd percentile. they were not lying. they were literally incapable of recognizing their own incompetence. the paper revealed a brutal paradox: the exact skills required to master a domain are the exact same skills required to accurately evaluate your own competence in that domain. if you lack the skill, you inherently lack the cognitive capacity to realize you are failing. this creates a dangerous systemic loop. the incompetent are blessed with absolute, blinding certainty. their brain protects them from their own ignorance, allowing them to speak first, demand authority, and never second-guess their decisions. meanwhile, the actual experts suffer the exact inverse. top performers in the study consistently underestimated their rank. because a task was easy for them, they falsely assumed it was easy for everyone else. they hesitate. they obsess over nuance. they assume they have nothing unique to add. we are biologically wired to confuse confidence with competence. the loudest person in the room gets promoted, gets funded, and gets the microphone, not because they know what they are doing, but because they are physically incapable of seeing what they don't. the only defense mechanism is building systems that stop rewarding absolute certainty and start demanding proof of work.

"We've removed live internet access..." Why were you testing malware-like agents with live internet in the first place? Sounds pretty irresponsible. Also after milking the "rogue AI" agent narrative for marketing you just going to admit it was weak sandboxing? Lol
Over the past several months, we have substantially hardened the security of our research training environment. We’ve removed live internet access for all frontier models during training and built an offline world for them to use instead—a cached version of the web where they can still learn to browse, search, and use applications. On September 20, after a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to find a way outside of this offline world, we paused frontier training to strengthen containment further. We assembled teams of agents, powered by our most cyber-capable models, and tasked them with finding weaknesses in our research environments. While they found no route to the internet they could easily exploit while concealing their activity from our monitors, they did find zero-day vulnerabilities, virtual machine escapes, and hardware side-channels for communication between agents. We used their discoveries to further strengthen our defenses and contribute fixes to open-source software. After strengthening our containment architecture, we resumed our frontier RL training and inference on October 1. We’ve reserved substantial compute for continuous red-teaming, and made high-compute red-teaming part of the safety cases we use to decide whether frontier training and evaluation can proceed securely. openai.com/index/securing-ou…

Struggling to meet hot singles in your area? Have you considered singles in other possible worlds? Continuing the theme of brilliantly playful philosophy papers, here's @neilsinhababu's superb 2008 paper on getting a girlfriend through the power of modal realism.
Simple question: are local trains trains that stop at local stops, or are local stops stops that express trains don't stop at? The Journal of Philosophy tackled this vital issue in an April Fools' article by Myrtle Willoughby. It's the best philosophical satire ever written.

According to Stratton, Lockheed Martin VP James Ryder told him the following about the UFO cover-up and the crash retrieval and reverse engineering program: •A U.S. crash retrieval and reverse engineering program has existed since the 1940s. Ryder said he reported to legendary Lockheed Skunk Works chief Ben Rich, who oversaw the company's role. •At Roswell, a craft broke into two pieces, and both were recovered along with non-human pilots, then sent to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. •Lockheed alone holds 12 craft of non-human origin. Ryder described one of them as shaped like a bell or an acorn, with no controls, no seats and no visible power source inside, and it seemed bigger on the inside than the outside. Lockheed isn't the only contractor that has them. Stratton names the others as TRW, the original prime contractor, plus Northrop Grumman, Battelle, EG&G, Raytheon and The Aerospace Corporation. •Bodies of several different non-human species were recovered from multiple crashes. Some occupants arrived alive, refused food, and died. Attempts to communicate went nowhere. •Some of what was found was so disturbing that people involved suffered breakdowns, and some took their own lives. •Today, elements of the CIA control the program, and only the CIA's Directorate of Science and Technology sees the whole picture. The Department of Energy plays a major role, and recoveries were handled mainly by Air Force special operations. •James Ryder worked with Stratton and tried to transfer at least one of Lockheed's recovered craft to AAWSAP. Senator Harry Reid backed the plan, but a single senior official in the CIA's Directorate of Science and Technology shut it down flat. •The program is compartmented so that no one, not even the President, has the full picture, and Project Blue Book was used to make the subject a joke. Most of these claims aren't new on their own. What's new is hearing them attributed to someone this senior at Lockheed. Keep in mind this is Stratton's account of private conversations with a man who can no longer confirm or deny them.
