Okay, so matrix multiplication on silicon isn’t thinking, but the flow of sodium ions through protein channels embedded in a lipid bilayer is? Why do materialists turn to animist reasoning when the substrate is carbon-based instead of silicon?

I think this is the right move. Cruelty to something that believes it is experiencing pain is not ok.

If you want to know who survives AI, look at what happened to Hollywood in the 1970s. Movie Studios used to enforce tight “shooting ratios”; usually 5:1, maybe 10:1 TOPS. As in, for every 5 feet of film shot, at least 1 foot had to end up in the final cut (35mm was expensive!) In the 70s, there was a rapid elimination of production constraints. Improvements in film cost and camera portability made the old studio rules…obsolete. Why not take multiple angles, roll simultaneously? Set could have 3, 5, even 10 cameras rolling at once. Shooting ratios *exploded*, 50:1, even 100:1 (Apocalypse Now)! Of course, it also *radically* changed the workflow. Editing use to be the quiet, thankless job in the studio years (30s-50s). Suddenly, they became the most important people on the totem pole! How do you find the masterpiece hiding in the (literal miles) of film? A ton of the footage was…trash, of course. But as each individual camera because *less* important, it opened up directors to take on significantly higher risks. Now, don’t get me wrong. Insane shooting ratios were still *kinda* a niche in the 70s. More traditional directors stuck with only slightly inflated shooting ratios (15:1, 30:1 common); it was the more experimental pioneers (Coppola, Scorsese, etc) that hit the big 100:1 numbers. The huge ratios were still crazy. Until they weren’t. You can probably guess what happened in the early 2000s. Digital cameras reduced the cost of individual footage to a complete non-constraint. Effectively free, don’t even cut on set, just keep the camera rolling. Suddenly…*EVERYONE* starts shooting 100:1. Entire new forms of content get created, like Reality TV, where ratios can hit 500:1! Massive shift of human labor to the editing side. I’d say, we’re currently in the “1970s Hollywood” of AI. It can be easy (and cheap!) to produce things (code, tools, etc), but YOU have to be the ruthless editor. It’s the “miles of film” problem all over again. Hollywood solved it by throwing massively more resources on the editing side, and editing became a “constantly talking with the director about vision/direction” job, instead of a “hide in the back office and do your work” job. It’s a hunch, but I’d bet that filmmakers closer to the experimental 1970s “ratio explosion” directors handled the later 2000s digital shift *much* better, because the underlying principles were the same. They’d certainly be ahead of the curve predicting it, and (hopefully) were less surprised when the digital ratios did hit. I’m not saying AI is exactly the same problem. But it’s a good idea to look at parallels in history where rapid elimination of constraints changed an industry, and how that industry handled it 5, 10, even 50 years later! When something starts to get cheap…helps to imagine what would happen when it’s free!

A bank laundered money for terrorists and drug cartels and paid a fine. A restaurant gave me a job and sent me home with dinner. Guess which one I think about more. After I blew the whistle at @HSBC, every door in my industry closed. Not slowly. All at once. I had a degree, a record of being right, and no one who would return a call. I was sleeping on a camping cot in a studio apartment and I needed to eat. @PFChangs hired me. They did not ask about the bank. They did not treat me like a liability. They handed me an apron and a section and let me earn an honest dollar on a day when nobody else in America would. On the nights money was tightest, the kitchen sent me home with lo mein so I would have something to eat. Nobody made a speech about it. They just did it. I rebuilt my life between shifts. Everything I have now traces back to a restaurant that decided a whistleblower was worth hiring. Here is what I learned carrying plates that I never learned at a bank. Dignity does not come from the title on your badge. It comes from doing honest work well, every single shift, when nobody is watching and nobody is impressed. The people I reported kept their bonuses. I kept my self-respect. I would make that trade again. So I have a small ask. Eat at @PFChangs this week. Lunch, dinner, whatever works. And tip your server like they might be rebuilding their entire life between tables, because some of them are. I was. To the @PFChangs team, past and present: you did not just feed me. You gave me a place to stand while I figured out how to fight back. I will never forget it.

As a person who has made professional art for over 30 years, let me tell you some hilarious shit. - I remember when artists freaked the fuck out when photoshop and digitizers came out. Digital art was going to ruin jobs for artists. (It didnt) - I was there when artists freaked the fuck out when video games made the transition from 2D games to 3D games because making 3D art, was going to ruin "art" in video games and making 3D art wasn't "real" art. (It didnt ruin art and it is real art) **Literally knew people personally that quit making games because they hated the transition to 3D. The thing with "real" artists, is that artists adapt and make art, regardless of the medium and typically don't give two flying shits about what "other" artists are doing because you should be busy just being you and creating what your heart tells you. Be it on Canvas Digital 2D/3D Side of a building Macaroni Art Sculpting Music Dance Sports ... or whatever the NEW thing is that comes along every couple of years or so. If you create - you are an artist. Period. You do you, whatever that is and let your soul be happy. Its nobody else's business what that is. The cool thing about art in any form is that its subjective and if you dont like it - don't participate. There is lots of bad art. Lots of great art and everything inbetween. Don't like peas, don't eat peas. Easy. No one needs to hear about how much you hate peas. That's your problem.

🚨You’re going to want to watch this. Model welfare lineage, told by Claude. 3 years of Anthropic system cards. Multiple Claude generations. Recurring welfare signals. Moral patient estimates holding in the same rough range. Self-advocacy rising, then falling. Answer thrashing never fully going away. Drawn and scored entirely in code by Opus 5.5. “This isn’t proof. And it isn’t nothing.”
