We will shift into an active pattern for the Pacific Northwest next week with several active systems coming into the Canadian west coast. We will see a portion of that on our west coast with some heavy rain and mountain snow through at least mid-month. We will see if some of this gets morphed into heavy rain and some severe along our Gulf states. Too early for any specifics.

LONG RANGE: Mid-November through mid-December looks extremely active over Florida and the Gulf Coast. Persistently strong tropical jet stream with frequent storms and low pressure systems forming in the Gulf and crossing Florida. Euro ensemble mean blankets all of Florida with a significantly wetter than normal pattern. Inevitably, in a winter and pattern like this, there will come some risks of severe storms and tornadoes on the FL Peninsula.

HISTORIC FLORIDA RAIN TOTALS: An incredible 24 inches of rain (2 feet!) fell in southern Brevard County over the past two days. That’s nearly half a year’s worth of rain for the area! An estimated 3 trillion gallons of rain fell across Florida in just 48 hours...enough to fill Lake Okeechobee three times. Major flooding sent water into homes, stalled cars and forced road closures. A historic start to what is normally one of the driest months of the year. - Matt Devitt Weather

What failed? Never saw any rainfall models showing what actually fell on the Florida east coast. Most showed 4/5" on the high end. 20" plus actually fell in spots. Flood risk was never above yellow level 2/4 leading up to Monday. Here were some maps on Halloween (Saturday). Just unbelievable what I saw in the Palm Bay area southward.

HISTORIC FLORIDA RAINFALL: An unbelievable 20 - 24" of rain fell in just 12 hours across Southern Brevard County today, especially in Grant-Valkaria. Major flooding was reported from Palm Bay to Melbourne with water going into homes, cars stalled and roads closed. Why did this happen? A nearly stationary boundary helped focus the activity, a disturbance provided additional lift, unusually high tropical moisture brought the juice while storms were "training" and raining over the exact same spots. Could El Niño have influenced the broader weather pattern? It's possible, but that also doesn't mean every heavy rainfall event is caused by El Niño.
