This disused toilet block in Greville Smyth Park would make a great micropub & cafe, paying for toilets to be reinstated & open to all. I’d love to do this. This park badly needs toilet facilities (as most parks in Bristol do). Who’s the cabinet member for parks @bristolgreen ?

Back in 2010, the minimum wage was £12,064 and the 'higher earner' band started at £43,875. You only paid 40% tax once you were earning 3.6x the minimum wage. There was clear incentive to progress, learn and aspire for more. As things stand, you now start paying 40% tax once you earn £50,270 which is just 1.83x the minimum wage. If it was the same multiple as 2010, the 'higher earning' band would be £98,841 and everyone below this amount would be paying 20%. Someone on £98,841 is effectively losing out on £9714.20 net per year if the bandings had simply moved in line with previous multiples relative to minimum wage. This is one of the reasons why the middle class is being eroded and why there's a cost of living crisis in the UK.
An increase to £13.20p/h equates to a minimum wage of £27,456, based on a 40 hour week. Once you factor in employers NI and basic pension contributions, the MINIMUM cost to hire a 21 year old for a company would be £31,461. This is before you factor in any overarching business costs like office space, laptops, phone, software, training, support staff, vehicles etc. This is going to be devastating to SME's who cant put together a simple 12 month budget without the goalposts being moved & their margins squeezed. It'll also be catastrophic to youngsters opportunities because businesses will simply not be able to afford to hire them. What's also incredible is that anything above £50,270 is seen as 'high earnings' in the UK and is taxed at 40%! We are governed by financially and economically illiterate morons. This will not end well.

Enormous house prices have ruined everything in the UK. Houses should cost £150,000, flats £75,000.

The French protests are indicative of a broader trend of the West becoming increasingly difficult to govern. Decades of low productivity growth, poor demographics, and unsustainable promises to retirees have been papered over by deficit-funded fiscal policy. But what can't last, won't. And with bond markets rebelling, there isn't a clear way for politicians to meet voters' rising expectations within tighter fiscal constraints. Politicians get elected by making promises that fiscal reality prevents them from fulfilling. When those promises disappoint, voters swing to the next party offering new pledges. Eventually, people tire of the whole system, and take their frustration to the streets, demanding what government no longer has the ability to give them.

My abiding memory of Jeffrey Archer is this incredibly biased summing up from the judge in his libel trial who basically swayed the jury cos he clearly fancied Archer's wife

Cutting Inheritance Tax is another bung for babyboomers. The average age of recieving taxable inheritance is in your early sixties. And rising. If you want to help your adult children when they're younger, you can, tax-free. @KemiBadenoch promised, in The Right Way, to prioritise any tax cuts on work and invesment. This tax cut largely gives people more money for retirement. telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

Etihad threatening to sue. UAE reportedly intimating that UK investment could be pulled. A Prime Minister couching any criticisism. If this sorry saga doesn't convince you that state ownership of football clubs should never be allowed, nothing ever will.

I can’t remember pensioners being so outraged when graduates had their loan terms changed arbitrarily after they’d agreed them.

Excellent news! Metro mayors should be able to fund and approve their own trams, light rail, and metros. This could be a big pro-growth measure that will spark a transport building boom. I’m happy to have played a part in pushing the idea along.

My latest paper, for @the_tpa, on how local government is being bankrupted by Westminster's increasingly Enron-like efforts to keep parts of the welfare state off the books, was published this weekend. taxpayersalliance.com/the-st…

Increasingly, the claim 'we voted for Brexit' is misleading, at best. Take my son & elder daughter, 27 & 24, they didn't get a vote in the 2016 Referendum. Their gran & grandad did, but as is the way with these things, they are both dead. How many more years to be asked again?
