If you're bored shitless with Claude's frontend design skill, these are three tools I've road tested that actually get LLMs doing good design. Not just using the italic hero serif, muted browns, three-card grid. Or 'let's build this in Bloomberg Terminal style'. Road tested these inside Claude Code. Ascending difficulty. 1. Refero Design - styles.refero.design/ 'Search curated references by brand, mood, color, typography, or URL. Open any style for colors, type, spacing, components, and a DESIGN.md your agent can use.' Search beautiful sites by niche. Pull design.md files straight out. Lost hours cruising it joyfully. The design.md files are less useful than they look though - Claude reads them then quietly defaults back to the frontend skill. You end up arguing with it. Opus 4.7 is so smart it freestyles on design unless you put it in a small box and threaten a water cannon if the fucker tries to get out. 2. Variant - variant.com/ I haven't shared this one too widely before because it's RAM-heavy and the site was already slow. But it's the first design tool I've seen that actually somehow seems to break the LLM reversion to mean tendencies which produce sites looking the same. If that sounds like gibberish, just try it. It's cool and does animations. I also love React. So I'm possibly biased. YC-backed design tool with an LLM bolted on. Am getting the best results from this one with this process: Get Claude to write the prompt, paste it in, generate variations. Click the three dots on one you like - then show variations. Spits out other page types, not just landing pages. Download React or HTML templates. Drop into your agent. Ask it to replicate. Same problem though. Claude uses the design as a guide, lifts the colours and fonts, freestyles the rest. So I built a variant skill that keeps it on track - github.com/ziggythebot/varia… - just copy this straight in. PSA. If you don’t use that skill, Claude will generate frontend design skills based on the Variant template you send it. It won’t preserve anything quirky in the navbars or layout. 3. Mobbin Design MCP - mobbin.com Paid. Most setup. 'Mobbin MCP connects your AI agents to 600000+ real screens from shipped products. Build from proven design patterns, not guesswork' Feed it into Claude and it sucks the design oil from the ground. If you're building for production, locking in design structure before you start saves you 20 hours of arguing about why your nav bar floats on iOS - or one of the other 50 problems you get vibe coding.
