1993: Senna's Final F1 win and podium #OnThisDay 7 November, Ayrton Senna concluded his six years with McLaren triumphantly, winning the 1993 Australian Grand Prix—his fifth victory of the season and, ultimately, the 41st and last of his career. It would also be the last time he would finish on the podium, score points, or even finish a race since the following season, he retired in Interlagos and Aida and died at Imola. It was also the last win for a Brazilian driver until Rubens Barrichello at the 2000 German Grand Prix. For Williams driver Alain Prost, who had already secured his fourth championship, this was also his final race. Reflecting on the moment, he shared, “It was difficult, thinking it’s the last time you will put your helmet on, put on your gloves, get into the car and think about the start.” On the podium, Senna extended an olive branch to his former rival, but Prost, wary, remarked, “I don’t think now is the right moment to talk about peace. It’s important to make peace while you’re driving, but the last time I tried, a month later, he deliberately crashed into my car at 170 mph. I’m not a hypocrite. For me, it’s too late now.” Prost’s teammate, Damon Hill, finished the race third. #f1 #formula1

FP2 long runs The new WDC leads in pace. He did a 15 lap stint on softs, impressive. However the soft does not show quite the degradation yet compared to the other compounds. Surprises of FP2 was McLaren, especially Norris on the 8 lap run on hards, almost matching Antonelli. A Favorite for the weekend continues to be Verstappen as he did his run on a medium, the off-set gap could put him beside Antonelli. Dissapointments are currently Ferrari, however lets see how it goes in qualifying tomorrow. Midfield: Gasly did a 10 laps stint on the softs, way ahead of their closest competition Racing Bulls. However with the current point gap I find them in nowheres land and will probably stay P6. Another surprise is the pace of BEA, he is making the difference in sector 2 actually. Talking sector 2, many of the rookies struggled getting the car around the part of the track. CAM have some work to do, but he gets the benefit of the doubt. We do not know fuel loads, which are currently the big unknown.

First few indication from FP2, shows that tyredegradation on each compound is just about the same. However only a few drivers used the hard compound, making the sample quite small. Soft: 0.23 s/lap Medium: 0.23 s/lap Hard: 0.21 s/lap (small sample) Depending on stint selection, some softs runs show less degradation than hard tyres.

Time spent in garage during FP2. Verstappen spent the most of his time in the garage during FP2. Alpine team spent the least amount of time, however not far from Racing Bulls. However BOR spent significantly more time. Time in garage can be telling on how many difficulities the teams have with their run plan. Being behind on a runplan can have consequences for FP3 where the last setup changes are being done, just before qualifying.

Something is off at Ferrari, their only strenght is the corners, they need it to work to be competetive as the engine is not competetive for the straights. Audi seems competetive in the corners, so does Aston Martin. Too bad it is a balanced circuit, so their edge here might be cancelled out on the straights. Williams struggling big time.
