In the days when a print byline mattered, his definitely did.
If there was a Mount Rushmore of ball writers, Ross Newhan would be on it. He was a giant in the biz, a Hall-of-Famer who spent much of his 43-year career covering @MLB for the LA Times. He was a mentor to myself and so many others, a friend to all. Ross died today at 89. RIP💔

Sanders was quite the storyteller, indeed. RIP.
Saddened to hear of the passing of Alex Sanders. He was a true Southern gentleman and one of the great storytellers South Carolina has ever known. Alex could hold a room like no one else. Praying for his family. Rest well, my friend.

Danny Partridge.
Name a bass player who deserves way more recognition than they get? The bass is an essential part of a band's sound, but some seriously talented players don't get the credit they deserve.

Was recently at a bar where drinks were dynamically priced, i.e. the more people bought a particular drink, the more expensive it became (price would then decayed over time towards a floor). Fascinating to watch a few market mechanisms play out in a bar: People ventured outside their usual orders in search of cheaper alternatives, often discovering new favorites in the process. Others treated rising prices as signals of quality, happily paying premiums to try expensive drinks they’d never had before. More experienced drinkers behaved like value investors, picking up underpriced drinks they already knew were good while everyone else chased the popular ones. Price discovery, information leakage, herding, and utility trades all unfolded over rounds of drinks. More bars should try this.

A worthwhile thread from a longtime friend.
Given that I’m a law school grad who has passed the bar, but does not practice, has been in politics, and has talked on TV from time to time, I have some perhaps uniquely qualified thoughts on this lawyer/attorney usage/nomenclature kerfluffle matter with the new WH press secretary. 🧵

Is there a Nobel for poetry? Or prose? I say this should get it.
It’s Thursday. I’ve been working since Sunday noon. Hour after hour. Day after day. Solving complex problems. Cooling heads. Dealing with people you see on TV every day. I’ve been in meeting after meeting talking talking (and also listening). My throat is a tad dry. I’m feeling the week weigh on me. I’m dehydrated. I’m tired. Then without even ordering it, a Port City Optimal Wit appears. Condensation forming on the glass. The slightly opaque orange yellow glow, like the sun at 3pm in the summer. I take a sip. There is no better feeling in the world.

A research into cat behavior shows that domestic cats regard humans as social peers rather than superiors, often perceiving their owners as large, awkward kittens. Far from being aloof or defiant, a cat’s apparent indifference stems from a profound interspecies mismatch in social expectations. As anthrozoologist John Bradshaw explains, cats—unlike dogs—never evolved to recognize humans as dominant leaders or authority figures. Instead, they filter all interactions through an exclusively feline framework. Behaviors like kneading on your lap or licking your hair are not mere displays of affection; they are the same grooming and bonding rituals cats reserve for close kin or pride members. In their eyes, we are simply enormous, somewhat clumsy fellow cats who require inclusion in the group. This absence of hierarchical deference accounts for cats’ frequent disregard of commands or household rules. Treating us as equals, they follow cat-to-cat social protocols in every encounter. The “gifts” of dead prey on the doorstep or constant shadowing around the home are acts of care toward what they see as a big, furless, rather inept companion. Recognizing this mindset transforms the human-cat relationship from one based on authority and obedience to one of mutual companionship. It turns out that while many owners believe they have domesticated their cats, the cats themselves are quietly convinced they are patiently tending to their oversized, adopted family members. Hamburg, a decidedly underrated tourist destination.
Here are the 30 busiest tourist cities within the EU. The chart shows two axis: "nights per resident" and "share from abroad". Data is from 2025.

People thinking about the movie or writing about it should take Katie's perspective seriously.
My review of the Social Reckoning. The movie tells you who to blame but it doesn’t tell you what doing better would look like.
