Hyderabad is the city of the Nizams, and its luxury palace hotels carry genuine historical weight behind the grandeur. Think crystal chandeliers and rooms that once hosted royalty, unlike anything a newly built five-star tower can offer. This week in India — 2 to 8 November Diwali week. The country spends four days getting brighter. Jaipur starts early: whole bazaars go up in lights and compete to be judged the best, with Johari and Tripolia the ones to walk. Friday is Dhanteras, the single busiest gold-buying day of the Indian year, and Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar stays open late and packed. Saturday splits two ways. Goa parades monstrous effigies of the demon Narkasur through the night and burns them before dawn, which is unlike anything else in the country. In Ayodhya, hundreds of thousands of oil lamps are lit along the Saryu ghats in a single evening. Then Sunday is Diwali itself. Bengal marks it as Kali Puja, and the largest in the state is at Barasat, with pandals, theatre, magic shows and fireworks all night. In Amritsar the Sikh festival of Bandi Chhor Divas falls on the same day, and the Golden Temple sits lit and doubled in its own water. And in Varanasi, diyas run down every step to the river — hire a boat at dusk and watch the ghats from the water. One tip: carry nothing. Every stall, every auto, every chai counter takes UPI. Scan, pay, keep walking. All seven, mapped 👇

This week in India — 26 October to 1 November The quiet stretch between Dussehra and Diwali, when the country catches its breath and the travelling season properly begins. The tiger parks reopened in the middle of the month and the grass is still low, which is the best combination of the year for actually seeing one. In north Kerala, Theyyam season starts — all-night temple performances where dancers in towering headdresses are believed to become the deity, held in village shrines and free to attend. Out west the Jaisalmer dune camps are filling now the heat has broken. At Ellora, thirty-four caves cut into a single cliff, the Kailasa temple carved downward from the top of the rock rather than built up from the ground. And in Old Delhi, Chandni Chowk is already buried in lamps and lights with Diwali a week away. Then Sunday, two seasons open at once. The Rann Utsav tent city raises itself on the salt flats of Kutch — and the opening fortnight is the quietest of the whole run, often with water still lying on the flats, which is what gives you the mirror. The same morning in Assam, Kaziranga’s dawn elephant safaris restart after the monsoon break. One tip: carry nothing. Every stall, every auto, every chai counter takes UPI. Scan, pay, keep walking. This week in India — 19 to 25 October The biggest week of the Indian year. Monday is Ashtami, Durga Puja’s peak night, and Kolkata simply doesn’t sleep — queues outside the pavilions until dawn, each one a built artwork, food on every corner. Six hundred kilometres south in Cuttack, the same festival looks completely different: the backdrops there are made of solid silver filigree, beaten by the city’s own smiths and brought out once a year. Tuesday is Dussehra. At dusk across Delhi, giant effigies of Ravana go up in flames at the Ramlila grounds, free to anyone who turns up. Wednesday splits three ways. In Kolkata it’s Bijoya Dashami — women smear each other with vermilion before the goddesses are carried to the river. In Mysuru the Jamboo Savari closes Dasara, Chamundeshwari riding a golden howdah through the city. And in Kullu the festival everyone else is finishing is only beginning, with Raghunath’s chariot pulled to the Dhalpur maidan and more than two hundred village deities brought down from the hills to meet it. Then Sunday brings the brightest full moon of the year, and folk musicians play inside Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur. One tip: carry nothing. Every stall, every auto, every chai counter takes UPI. Scan, pay, keep walking. All seven, mapped 👇

This week in India - 5 to 11 October A quiet few days, then three festivals open on the same weekend. Until then: Varanasi is in the last days of Pitru Paksha, the ghats busy from before sunrise, and every evening priests perform the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat — best watched from a boat drifting just off the steps. In Port Blair the Cellular Jail runs its sound-and-light show nightly inside the old penal colony. And from Munnar a jeep leaves before dawn for Kolukkumalai, the highest tea estate in the world, worth the 4am alarm now the monsoon haze has lifted. Then Saturday. Kolkata wakes at four to the Mahishasura Mardini broadcast, people go down to the river for tarpan at sunrise, and in Kumartuli the artisans paint the goddess's eyes — the moment she's said to come alive. The pandals open the same day, so this is when Durga Puja really starts, a week before anyone thinks it does. Sunday brings two more. Gujarat's nine nights of garba begin, aarti around eight and dancing past midnight, with a free public gallery at GMDC Ground in Ahmedabad. And Mysore Palace switches on close to 100,000 bulbs at 7pm, free to watch from the grounds and running to midnight. One tip: carry nothing. Every stall, every auto, every chai counter takes UPI.
