NEW: The Tortoise-Observer deal has been formally signed, with Lucy Rock named print editor and a voluntary redundancy scheme for staff who don't want to move over opening today

So Tortoise now owns the Observer. For the sake of all involved let’s hope it works. If James Harding’s figures are to be believed the Scott Trust has just enabled and funded a potentially powerful competitor to the Guardian in the liberal media space. Strange times

Statement on decision by The Scott Trust and GMG boards to approve the sale in principle of the Observer to Tortoise Media: NUJ general secretary-elect Laura Davison said: “Members at the Guardian and Observer will be angry and extremely disappointed that The Scott Trust and GMG boards have chosen to approve the deal in principle to sell The Observer to Tortoise Media despite the Union’s call for more time to consider this and other options.
“The timing of the decision, before the end of two extremely well-supported days of action, is particularly shabby. The NUJ chapel will be meeting later today to consider their response.”
She added: “Over the last two days members have done an incredible job of highlighting their concerns about the future of the titles, many taking strike action for the first time….

Good to @Torcuil arrive at the @gonuj93 picket earlier today. He treated colleagues to a few words in Gaelic. I thought @shattenstone (in the hat, megaphone in hand) might retaliate with some Yiddish, but no @NUJofficial.

The @guardian journos are on strike tomorrow after the bosses plan to sell the world’s oldest surviving Sunday newspaper @ObserverUK . Protected by the Scott Trust’s huge £1.3bn endowment fund they could easily protect and treasure the Observer but are choosing not to. Why ?
