Google's about to ship a PMAX option we've been asking for for years. 🎯
You'll be able to cap how much of a campaign's budget goes to partner networks, and set that cap as low as 0%.
PMAX bundles a lot of inventory together, and some of it is display and search-partner placements that spend your budget without doing much. For a long time you had no real say over that inventory.
The announcement has two parts: Channel Prioritization lets you tier channels as high or low priority, which only changes anything when the campaign is budget constrained. High-priority channels spend first at your target, the rest get the leftovers. That part's a nuance for most accounts.
Budget Allocation is the piece that matters. You can hold a low-priority channel to a percentage of daily budget, and 0% means it's off. That's a dial on the partner networks, not just a switch.
One caveat worth saying out loud: everything defaults to high priority, so nothing changes until you go set it yourself. Google isn't doing this for you.
Additionally, for Performance Max itself, you cannot disable specific Google channels like Gmail, Discover, or YouTube.
Google is pitching this as a pre-holiday control. If you're going to cap PMAX's partner networks, set it now, before Q4 spend ramps, not in the middle of peak when every dollar is working hardest.
If you run PMAX on a Shopify store and you've watched spend leak into placements you'd never pick, this is the setting to test first. Cap the partner networks, keep budget on the intent that converts, and see what your PMAX looks like without the padding.
Hoping we'll start to see the Channels sliders rolled out more widely soon too!

If only Google would do this for its AI Overviews. 📝
Google updates the AI content guidelines to say you should "manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing"

I do find it funny that Google measures quality here by traffic to the hotel web sites and based on having to do more searches. When AI Overviews and AI Mode but lead to less traffic directly to web sites and also it leads to more searches done by users.
Google says it pushed out its "largest reduction in quality" for Google Search in its 29 year history over the EU DMA changes for vertical search services (VSS) seroundtable.com/google-eu-d…

There are times spam updates go unnoticed, and then there are some spam updates that cause a ton of volatility. Well, the August spam update was big. My latest post covers four case studies based on my analysis -> The August 2026 Google Spam Update – Scaled Content Abuse, AI Content, Programmatic Content, Thin Affiliates, And More [Case Studies]
The issues I surfaced across sites that were impacted included:
*Scaled content abuse (of course...)
*Mixed with AI-generated content and programmatic content (again, of course...)
*Thin affiliates (scraping Amazon data, no human involvement at all)
*Malicious activity (mixed with other spam issues)
And more...

I need to give you a behind-the-scenes look because it was genuinely one of the funniest moments on the show & @rustybrick caught none of it on tape.
At 8:51, I cut @TheMarketingAnu off & pivoted to @gregfinn. We NEVER got back to Anu.
Not only that, but because Greg & Barry are both away & only had ONE screen, they didn't see the pouting faces Anu was making for NEVER getting back to her coverage of whatever PPC.
You can't see it on screen, but the rest of the video, when Greg and Barry are talking, Anu was FURIOUS and eventually started eating potato chips on the show in protest (it will go down as one of the greatest protests ever. Some people stand in front of tanks, other people eat chips).
But because she suffered in silence, Google Meet (which we had to use because of Barry's poor internet) didn't record ANY of it. So now one of the funniest moments on the show is as if it never happened.
On top of ALL that.... Barry couldn't even wear a real shirt. He said it was because his other shirt smelled.

Is Google making broader changes to Smart Bidding? @adsliaison says No. seroundtable.com/google-ads-… great back and forth with Google's Ginny Marvin and Maggie Humphrey from @CypressNorth and a video from @gregfinn

Would you rather have smart bidding or “un-smart smart” bidding? If you like option 1, you might be out of luck.
On August 17, Google’s Bidding Target Optimization feature is coming to change campaigns limited by budget (and potentially cost advertisers more money). Google says that this update is supposed to “deliver more predictable campaign performance,” but our team isn’t really sold. 😬
Thanks @rustybrick for breaking this update down!

Is @gregfinn secretly a seer of the future? 🧙 Maybe not, but he was able to predict in 2021 that Google’s change to have Target CPA and Target ROAS bundled with Maximize Conversions wouldn’t work.
As Greg from the past assured: “This isn’t helping anybody. It’s actually confusing people.”
Now, Google is going back to having just Target CPA or ROAS!
Thanks @rustybrick for breaking down this update (and the reversal of it).
