Spectropia; or, Surprising Spectral Illusions (1865), a wonderful book of Victorian hi-tech ghost conjuring which allows the reader to summon, as the sub-title proclaims, “ghosts everywhere and of any colour”. More here: publicdomainreview.org/colle…

The 17th century dovecot, located to the south of the Manor House in Sowerby N Yorks. The original doorway on the north face has been walled up. With a new door to the south. But apparently it still retains some of it its original interior features. #Yorkshire

One of my favourite museum trinkets, a teeny figurine of your enemy in a lead box inscribed with a curse. Sort of a portable voodoo doll from 2,400 years ago. #MuseumMagic Kerameikos Museum, Athens.

Think about how much time was wasted at Google to prevent its AI chatbot from accidentally saying something that pissed off the president. Corruption is truly a tax on capitalism.
Replicated this myself. Pretty wild! mediaite.com/media/tech/goog…

Today's find is the magnificent Crescent Hotel in Ocean Beach, Florida. It was built in 1938 by Henry Hohauser in the tropical Art Deco style. It also can be described as Streamline Deco, a late adaptation of Art Deco, since it has curved roofline, horizontal speed stripes.

Google has specifically prevented its AI tool from telling users who won the 2020 presidential election, even though it happily tells us that Trump won in 2016 and 2024. This sort of political intervention into LLM responses is deeply problematic. (h/t to Charles Mann)

Trump supporter: “Everything that Trump said since 2017, he delivered on it” Davram Stiefler: “What about when he said he was gonna end the Ukraine war on day one?” TS: “Well honestly I didn’t really follow that much because of… I don’t think it really happened to be honest, the Ukraine war. I think that was the fake news media. You can’t believe everything you see” DS: “You don’t believe that war is happening at all?” TS: “Uhm… I really don’t, no. When you watch the footage if you pay attention, if you see with both eyes, you can see what’s real and what’s not”

An automaton fuelled by tomes of newly available knowledge sweeps away the old society. No, not a self-portrait by ChatGPT in the style of a Georgian satirical print, but one of several “March of Intellect” cartoons published ca. 1828: publicdomainreview.org/colle…

There are millions of Americans who now believe that if a Republican candidate loses that means the election was rigged. I've talked to these people. Trump has done more damage to the trust in elections and democracy than anybody else in our 250 years and it's not close.
Q: You'll respect the election results whatever happens? TRUMP: If they're honest elections (That's a no!)

At some point it becomes the responsibility of the general population to be less stupid
In a new poll, 15% of Americans said they believe between 1 and 5% of NCAA athletes are transgender. 14% think between it's between 6 and 25%. Meanwhile, an NCAA spokesperson confirmed that the current number is "effectively" zero thebulwark.com/p/new-poll-bu…
