Last summer, we received an unexpected donation from a family with East Midlands roots: a previously unknown Old Charges manuscript, now known as the Barret-Hallam Ms.

This should be a no-brainer. If we want to honour the lollypop lady who's kept kids safe for years, or a wonderful writer, or the scientist who's pioneered a new treatment, they shouldn't have to pass a test of loyalty to a bygone empire. Let people choose theguardian.com/commentisfre…

What a bizarre article
Public sector pensions disappear on death and cannot be bequests to kids, so the effective tax rate (if you insist on doing like this)…
…is 100%

As the dust settles after yesterday's reforming #budget2024, it's time to look at what the reforms to Agricultural Property Relief (APR) from Inheritance Tax (IHT) actually mean, instead of the toys out of the pram reaction from a section of the farming community. A short 🧵 1/7

I'm not on this site much any more. But from the age of 5 onwards, nothing has made me more angry than people getting things WRONG about QUEEN ELIZABETH I. It's pathological. I ended up getting a PhD in it.
So, some Friday content for you about the Telegraph & Good Queen Bess.

A big trend of the last 20 years has been admin headcount reduction, and I am *convinced* it's a big part of our productivity crisis.
Instead of one admin on 25k, you make 10 staff on 2-6x the pay do admin they're slow/inefficient at, costing vastly more. True in NHS/gvt/corps.

I see we’re all upset about paintings again 🙄
Urgh! The comments under the posts about this are absurd.
“Starmer hates Britain” they all bleat in unison.
But the story behind the headline is more interesting…..🧐

The figure here is fake. The “tax gap” is £36bn, of which tax evasion is £6bn. Most of that is small businesses - people taking payment in cash.
I wrote about the statistics, and what they mean, here taxpolicy.org.uk/2024/05/27/…
Indeed. Business fraud thirty times higher than benefit fraud: yet so far, no plans for hotlines to ring if you suspect a company is having a laugh with millions of our pounds.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The figures here for tax evasion are not taken seriously by experts. See taxpolicy.org.uk/2024/05/27/is_…

While we are pleased to see some changes to Manor Road, Abbey Road remains a death trap. We want meaningful action from @NewhamLondon and @ThamesWater to keep people safe within days, not weeks.

Offshore secrecy is a huge problem. It enables tax avoidance, sanctions-busting, dodgy PPE suppliers and drug cartels.
We've a new proposal to end it, forever.

Major story in today’s @FT about the Govts radical plans for the future of JobCentres. Complete re-orientation. Affecting millions.
But no - let’s talk about Sue Gray’s salary and gossip about so-called rows in Govt.
We are poorly served by political “journalism”?
“Let’s not forget, Sue Gray has to buy her own clothes.”
Sue Gray's pay has sparked controversy amid reports she's been "holding down the salaries" of special advisers further down the chain, says @sam_lister_.

If we want a meaningful conversation about reducing road danger, we need to see who is killing who.
Only showing mode based victim numbers is disingenuous at best.

Shadow welfare secretary Mel Stride tells Labour MPs: "Look to your conscience. These measures, you know in your heart that these measures are wrong."
In 2012, the Tory govt capped benefits increases to 1%, well below inflation & introduced the “bedroom tax”.
In 2013, household benefit cap was introduced to limit max a family could receive in benefits.
In 2015, the Tories abandoned targets set by Labour to reduce child poverty.
In 2016, benefits were frozen for four years as public spending was cut again.
In 2017, Tory govt brought in two-child cap for tax credits & UC to remove income for three or more children.

The state pension is set to rise by £400 - more than inflation and more than the cut from winter fuel allowance. Pensioners will get between £100 and £200 more from the state next year.
£130bn is spent on pensions a year - more than the home offic, defence & education combined.

There are really three strands to this. One is Frost's false claim that people are being convicted simply for expressing opinions. The second, as highlighted here, is his disingenuousness in criticizing the use of legislation which the Tory government passed. 1/4

If Conservatives want "lower taxes" AND "higher military spending", when an ageing society is driving up the demands on the state, they need to think harder about what government should *stop* doing.
Cutting a few civil servants, or just "believing in" things, won't do it.

Last night #Brighton put on a wonderful show of community strength, reassuring migrants, asylum seekers and refugees that they are welcome and valued in our city. However, it was a great shame that the Jewish community and Israelis in Brighton were made to feel less valued and welcome by the unnecessary chanting of “from the river to the sea” - a call for the destruction of Israel, the only Jewish homeland. The Jewish community has a long history of fighting for the rights of all migrants and refugees, particularly as many of us are only one generation away from arriving here as refugees. It’s sad that there are those who seek, once again, to alienate and ‘other’ us. Last night was an opportunity for all of Brighton’s citizens to join together against hate, it’s unfortunate that some felt that another form of bigotry - anti-Jewish racism, was appropriate. This normalisation of antisemitism contributes to the record high number of antisemitic incidents recorded by @CST_UK in the first six months of the year - 1,978 reported nationally, with a shameful 23 in Brighton & Hove - a City of Sanctuary. Hate is hate and unless we stop encouraging & excusing anti-Zionism as driver for antisemitism, demonstrations like last nights, that Jewish residents want to participate in, will continue to leave us feeling alienated and confused.
Surge in UK antisemitic incidents in first half of 2024, says charity theguardian.com/news/article…
