These NYC apartments are standing empty, not because the owners don't want to rent them, but because rent stabilization laws prohibit them from charging enough to earn back the costs of necessary repairs. My latest for @WSJFreeEx

There's something deeply unsafe about safetyism. We wish people a safe flight—yet flying commercially is almost perfectly safe. We don't wish people a safe drive—yet US roads are the equivalent of a 737 crashing every 48h, killing everyone aboard. But we scare people when they get in an airplane but not when they get in a car. The biggest opportunity we have to improve road safety is self-driving, yet there's lots of anti-self-driving safety talk, and self-driving is held to a *dramatically* superhuman safety bar. The din about AI safety has reached extreme tenor—yet there have been zero material safety incidents. And the positive benefits of AI could improve and save many lives. But the safetyists say we must slow down. We destroyed the nuclear power industry in this country nominally out of safety concerns, yet joule for joule nuclear power is *by far* the safest form of energy, even accounting for Chernobyl (a genuine disaster) and Three Mile Island (generally a non-event). Building and fire codes are supposedly there to protect us from unsafe buildings. But actually the red tape makes development slow and sometimes impossible. So the safetyism protects us from jobs, innovation, and reindustrialization. TSA was there nominally to protect us from terrorist threats—yet to the extent it pushes passengers at the margins from safe airplanes to dangerous roads, it actually kills not just time and money but actual humans. Safetyism is deeply unsafe.

Beware any political tribe that says neutrality is complicity. That formulation leaves you only two choices: obedience or enemy status.

People can call MMOs a degenerate time-sink as much as they want but the truth is that men are much better off rolling for a chance of a better magic sword off a dead computer dragon than they are gambling on sports

This video is a dogwhistle for AI hype people who don’t understand tech. Astra used the open source BodyParts3D 4.0 library to draw the body. It didn’t draw the entire body. The humans who made the library did. Astra just loaded a library. Apparently that’s very impressive
Ashe Magalhaes (x.com/ashebytes) used the freshly released OpenAI model GPT-6 Astra to build a 3D website that pulls apart the male anatomy into 2,234 modeled pieces. Obviously, many existing anatomy software can do the same, but can you imagine how much time and effort it took to build those? Now, essentially, someone with a good idea and skills in prompt engineering (as well as vibe coding) can do something similar. The live demo is available here: human-atlas-seven.vercel.app… I cannot wait to see many more examples of how such large language models are used to build interesting and useful tools in medical education.

It's completely ridiculous watching people who are not 3D artists being "blown away" by ChatGPT being able to model basic stuff in Blender. Yall don't realise how shit works in actual 3D pipelines. Hard surface modeling and access to 3D model libraries is nothing

I’m a retired brain surgeon and I wanna tell you why you feel like life is passing by. I just need one minute to explain this to you so hang in there. Repetitive daily routines stop the brain from recording clear detailed memories. When every day looks the same, your brain does not track time the same as a clock does. It tracks change. If nothing new happens then days, months, and years start to blur together. This is know as Time compression. When life lacks variety, your brain compresses past days together, making it feel like time is sped up. To stop feeling like life is passing you by, add new experiences to your life. Break routine habits, like changing your daily home routine, taking a different route to work, or trying a new hobby. Schedule small trips or plan new adventures so your days do not blend together. Practice mindfulness by staying fully focused on what you are doing right now and not trying to race off to the next task. Keep a journal and write down happy memories or memorable parts of the day before you go to sleep. Take deep, calm breaths when you feel anxious or rushed to return your focus to the moment. You can and you will retrain your brain to not feel like life is passing you by by following these few simple measures.

I actually appreciate that there is some debate here (rather than outright AI slop-slinging). I think it is important that we have a civil debate using reasoning to talk about it. My stance with AI is clear. AI is a tool to achieve the vision I have for this game. Yes AI did the code and generated the art, but as a human creator, I decide what goes into my game that achieves my creative vision.

Before I say this, I want to say that I love using AI in gamedev and think it's based. That said: I keep seeing these vibe coded games made by non-gamers that are clearly just a direct clone of a preexisting game. The dev can't tell because they haven't played enough games to notice. Like.... this is Rimworld. You can look at it and identify the beds, the room layouts, and so many other things. I saw someone posting about a 'spooky horror game with mist' the other day that was very clearly just the opening sequence to Silent Hill 2 with a Milady character model replacing James. The dev genuinely seemed to think their vibe coding instructions had created this. Taste really is the differentiator. Taste as well as knowledge of the medium. Because this shit is embarrassing.

I hate the feeling of no longer being fully in the loop. I tell agents to debug an issue. They explain what goes wrong. Propose a solution. That's sure a lot of jargon. Do I fully understand what they're saying? Kind of. But certainly not like if my mind was solely focused on that bug fix, instead of juggling 5 other threads. I tell them to do it. Make the fix, create a PR, the usual. Is their solution really the right approach? Will they not include a dumb invariant that might later bite me in the ass? Glancing at code, it *seems* fine. But I'm not sure. I'd have to go way deeper into the issue to be able to tell. But that would defeat the purpose of having agents do the thing instead of me. That'd be *inefficient*. So I merge it in, and move on to the next thread. Forever falling behind so I wouldn't fall behind.

Every once in a while you work at a company that only hires people who know what they're doing, and suddenly its 20 people doing the same work as 400 somewhere else. There's zero meetings, everyone talks once a week on slack, and you go huh, how much garbage is there actually.
